first post new 71
just getting starting on my first ever project. i have some basic mechanical skills, basic tools, and a strong desire to learn and do as much as i can myself. but i also work full time and have other non auto projects going on. first and most of all i need brakes. my local shop is suggesting to do the drop with the brakes. I'm looking at the 4/6 from early classics. my shop( who i love and trust) is taxing the kit so they can add their guarantee. should i have them do both and just pay alot? or have them do the brakes and i do the drop? should i do both? any suggestions on prioritizing steps?

Welcome to the board. It depends on your priorities. If you want to drive it and just need the basics on brakes I'd do it myself. If you have the money and can wait for them to do it before driving it then let them do it.

I think w/basic mechanic skills and desire you could do both probably in a weekend?? haven't done a drop but did drums this weekend,seems like it could take 3 days tops??
If not pay someone (thats what I'll do if i want something and don't have that time. Oh and welcome to the board from Orygun Brian

Was just there this weekend for my Daughters graduation. Her and I pushed a 10' Budget van from Eureka to San Diego in 14 hrs. Beautiful area up there.

Keep in mind the shop rate of most of the new friends you've just found on this board. I'm willing to bet a few Northern California/Southern Oregon members (heck, even Nevada, Idaho, Washington, Montana members on a good day
 ) would be more than willing to help out on labor for nothing more than a cold beverage and good conversation.

to the boardwith atlest basic skills and willingness to learn, id do it myself, shouldnt take much more than a weekend 3-4days taking your time

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm gonna have them do the the basic brakes and then add a booster and drop at a later time.

from utah...personaly if you have never doen brakes, try to find soe friend who has to at least watch over your shoulder to make sure you do it right..the tiem to figure stuff out on your own is not the brakes...could end up killing you or somebody else if you made a mistake..just my .02 on that..brakes are nto that hard, sometimes a big pain in the butt, but not that hard....i would really look for a friend on here, or somebody you know to watch you..
