These trucks are freakin ugly!

If thats what everyone thinks how come I cant find parts? These trucks are not the preferred chevy truck but parts are still slim. It pretty much impossible to find a good short bed. Were there less of these trucks made compared to the 67-72 models?

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

Now that I have this body style, I find them all over, even up here in the rust belt. Go to Watts' Auto Salvage in Nebraska, just over the border in Kansas. I must have counted 100 60-66 trucks, some had sweet 6' boxes.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

Least you can guys can find parts for them. Dang near every thing here is rusted to death. I got lucky and found a hood and door with moslty surface rust. Only benefit is our stuff rusts from the bottom up, while yours from the top down. (From what I've seen)

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

The biggest problem with these trucks is rust. The flat-top roof, a hold over from a popular 1960 car roofline is the culprit for a lot of the cab rust-out on these trucks. Once the roof rusts out most people junked the trucks because it is very difficult to repair. Another reason why they are not as popular is the poor brakes and the weak stock engines. The 1971-72 disc brake chevies are still popular work trucks. I do see a number of the 64-66 trucks around that are still used as work trucks. I can't say the same for Ford or Dodge trucks.
I really like the styling of my 65 stepside. It is very stylish, but not in an aerodynamic way like every other car on the road. I think the roof line makes it look like it is wearing a hat. The hood has an aggressive look to it. The 60-61 hoods are very aggressive looking with the huge nostrils. The door windows are small, much like car windows of the time. I like that because I can hang my arm out the window in almost any weather. On a new truck without wind-wings you freeze if you drive around with the window down. Its a very simple truck that will last forever, and isn't so valuable that you can't use it.
For parts try http://www.lmctruck.com/ they have virtually everything.

Yes,there were alot more 67/72s built. The increase through those years was outstanding.Sheetmetal design hurt these trucks. They have awesome style, but construction terchniques left a few areas for improvement.

I've always loved the 60-66 body style. To me the 67-72 were kind boring... too new looking, no character. But, I gotta admit, 55-57 will always be my favorite.

Yes I have to agree. 60/66 trucks look good. Plenty of style and character, just enough comfort and easy to work on.I think the brakes need TLC, but I reckon GM got it right with this model.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

I absolutely love them! I prefer the raked back look of the 60-63, but 64-66 are great as well! Here in SD, shortboxes are extremely rare, but a few years back when visiting a friend near Atlanta, I noticed that of the ones I saw, they were almost all shortbox. I guess it's cuz most up here were bought for use on a farm. My 63 long fleet was originally a california truck, brought here in 1969. I love driving it despite it's drum brakes, even on the highway & interstate. You just have to know it's limitations and pay a little more attention to the road.

I've always liked the 60-66 'burbans, but when I first started to see them, I didn't know the difference in years, or how to tell them apart. When I first saw mine, wasn't crazy about it. But, after while, I liked it more than the other years cause noone else had one in my year. 64-66 were the most popular, that is mostly what you will find around here.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

1962 is the unloved year. They had an odd grill. But I'm starting to like them. A lot of people put 64-66 hoods and grills on earlier years. I prefer the stock look.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

I also have a '62. Astonishingly, the '62 grille is my favorite of the '60-66. I also like the '60 and '61 hoods, which most people don't. Again, I also agree, I am more partial to the wrap windshield of the '60-'63. I originally bought mine cuz there werent any customized around here, except a '65 trailer princess, and I wanted something different. Here in Boise, Idaho, sixties Chevs have really cought on (I think in part to my buddies and me). Mainly '64-6 though. I was also the first one in town to slam one on whitewalls. A year later there were five more in town in black primer, slammed on wide whites. I did what anybody would do. If I Can't have the only lowered sixties pickup on whitewalls, I will have to have the lowest!! The second picture was where it sat BEFORE I did the air ride! It was three inches off the ground at all times!

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

I love these trucks. I have a '62 c10 shortbed stepside. My Uncle in Georgia gave it to my Dad a few years ago and he gave it to me. I have had it now 'bout 5yrs. What really grinds me as far as parts go is finding a hood. Everyone offers sheetmetal for '60-'66 but no hoods. Also the '62 grille. I know, I know it is one model year but you can buy '64s all day long. Anyway as far as I'm concerned these are the best.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

62 was the first year of the new hood style, it's the same as the 64-66s. Luckily I have a decent alum grille on mine, but I know what you mean on trying to find parts. Try finding parts for a suburban......

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

it seems like everywhere you look for parts it says either 63-66 or 64-66 i got tired of it and since my frame had been shortened and needed welding anyways i just found a 66 stepside short wheel base and am in the process of switching.but i need to put floor pans cab corners rockers and floor supports. also i like the look of the 60-61 grill ok im done for now.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

I dig the 60-61 hood. I know alot of people swap them out, but that is one mean looking hood. I just scored a good daily driver chrome 60 grill for 55.00 off of ebay,so there are parts out there.Swap meet season is here too.

Re: These trucks are freakin ugly!

The detail in styling make the 60-66 the most unique in Chevy truck history. Just look at the hood of the 62-66, it makes all other designs boring. Also, look at the back of a small window cab and notice all the character lines built into the sheetmetal, and the roof which resembles a built in sun visor.

I have to say that these trucks, especailly the stepsides have to be the most unaerodynamic vehicles ever built. The roof and the hood are huge air catchers!
