Turning the oil pump?

O.K., I saw this a while back but I can't find it now. I bought a Jeg's HEI dizzy for my '70, and was gonna put it in, but am worried that it wont go all the way down, and I'll have to turn the oil pump. How do I do that? I have a pretty good idea how to put it in otherwise.

Re: Turning the oil pump?

You just need to turn the oil pump shaft's drive slot lines up with the dizzy's drive tang. a long screwdriver & a flashlight will do the trick

not that this is the most recommended way but you can just bump the key so the cam gear well turn the dis. gear until it just drops down in the right spot.

Re: Turning the oil pump?

The pump shaft has a fork shape on it, where the Dis end slips into. If they are not lined up it won't go down.

Did that method the last two times that I had a distributor out and it worked just fine. My buddy who showed me that trick said that was how his dad taught him to do it.

If you turn the moter for any reason with the distributer out you have to do this to get it to drop down in the right spot . Ive done it lots of times you can even turn it with a wrench or by hand too, it dosent have to go far

Re: Turning the oil pump?

Now when they are talking about long screwdrivers, they are usually talking about a 9" screwdriver.
