Will an 86 Suburban Class V hitch fit a '72 C10?
When talking to my dad today he told me that I could have a Class V hitch (for towing airstream trailers) that came off of a 1986 Chevy Suburban. This is a bolt - on hitch and we were wondering if anybody knows if it will FIT on my '72 C10. He's also giving me the electric brake controller.
I don't mind drilling the holes for mounting, BUT I want to know if it will fit the frame. I've done some searches for Bally hitches on the net and haven't found an interoperability guide. It appears from the Reese Hitch site that '73-84 hitches are same 85-00 hitches are the same (for chevies), BUT what about '72 hitches? what specs are needed? Is it a specific type? Anybody have an interoperatability guide? OR could anybody go out and measure their '72 hitch width and let me know, SO i can check with the trailer people for an '86 and see if they match? ideas anybody? Brian

I'm sorry I FORGOT TO MENTION, my dad lives in florida, the hitch is currently in tennessee and I'm in georgia, SO, I can't just go get it and measure it up. It'd take a 4 hour trip -- SO FIRST, I want to make sure it's worth it...

after searching etrailer.com I found a DrawTite hitch with model # 41504 fits my '72 truck
AND model 41500 fits an 86 suburban. I wonder what the difference is.. I think the 'burb's frame is wider.. oh well.. maybe somebody out there will know. Brian

Oh I forgot to say, I WON'T be towing an airstream... I'm just lookng to tow a car hauler and car weighing 4000 lbs total.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the very end of the 86 sub. frame rail seem to be rounded and drop down, unlike how your trucks rails are straight. I still would get the hitch anyway They are easy to mod. with a welder and torch just keep strength and durablity in mind.

Ozarkhippie is right. The trucks have straight frame rails and the hitch bolts to them. They use bolt on rear bumper brackets. The Suburban (and Blazer) have curved rear frame rails and use the end of the frame as the inside bumper mounts. The Blazer and Sub use different hithces as well. I bought a Drawtite Class IV hitch (600/6000 1100/11000 with load distributor) from a local dealer for $125 plus tax. Early Classics has receivers for all of the trucks that are "hidden" behind the license plate.

Class III or IV
After I got the Longhorn and saw the flex in the step bumper/modified hitch, I went in search of the right setup. Could have taken it from my GMC which has had one since 81, but checked around and Carquest had a special on. Valley hitch, for about $105. Used one of the existing frame holes as a locator and drilled the other two per rail. Just needed to get a drop coupler to keep the trailier near level during towing. I can get you the Carquest or Valley # if you need it. Since none of your options are local, why not spy a Suburban locally on a lot or your neighbors, and measure the rails of it and your own rig. Hope it helps a bit.
