Give input! Best exhaust for towing?
I am getting ready for the new exhaust system for Low Buck and I will be using this truck for my new tow vehical. I am thinking about going with a 2.5" single exhaust. I am removing the junk headers and going back to stock style manifolds and thought a single exhaust set up might help out with more torque out of my stock 350 w/auto. I know we always went with single's on our rock crawlers because it helped out alot with real low end grunt but what do you think about this for a street truck? Single would also help out with more space under the truck and would be cheaper to have installed but I only want to do it once.

Re: Give input! Best exhaust for towing?
I gave my My '68 Firebird a mild TPI 350 transsplant using truck rams horn manifolds, and an Xpipe. I made new downpipes and an ')(' , then attatched the preexisting Flowmasters and over the axle tailpipes. My only regret is that the Exhaust is too much quieter than before, and I need to swap in some noisier mufflers.
Idle is a bit loud if you are directly behind the car, and above 3000 RPM, the noise tapers off pretty fast. I did it having read about xpipes giving a HP and Torque gain over duals and 'H's, but I went EFI, changed my motor and tranny, and can't realy compare directly. Under light accel at 2800 RPM it sounds very nice. I'll do it on my truck one day if my exhaust falls off or something. |

It was a long day for me last night when I posted that but I was thinking about 2" pipes out of the manifolds then join them together into a 2.5" or 3" colector and then run that thru a flowmaster or spin-tech and out the back. Kevin LFD Inc. |

True, I always liked a single 3" myself, but I am not the norm

Re: Give input! Best exhaust for towing?
I like the set up on 77 Cheyenne from the perspective of sound inside the cab. I'm running 2.5" Corvette style Ram horns into a fabricated 2.5" Y-pipe. This feeds in to a high flow cat then a SISO Flowmaster with a 2.5" tailpipe.
The truck has a nice rumble but is quiet inside the cab. Here's the polished Ram horns

Re: Give input! Best exhaust for towing?
Nice set up! Well after some more thought I will be going with a single out. This leaves the room I need for my air tank for the rear over load bags and dumping a single out the drivers side will be real easy plus I can use the factory hangers for a clean look. Thanks for the input and I will post pics on the Low Buck thread in a few weeks.

Re: Give input! Best exhaust for towing?
They weren't actually polished as in the final finish.
They were ground smooth of all casting flash, bumps, & ridges; then D.A.'d until uniform; then coated w/hi-temp ceramic style coating (HPC, JetHot). Speedway does make a stainless polished ramhorm..... but it's expensive.
