Arrow Re: getting rid of the voltage regulator

I see the change from the fender mounted regulator and change to HEI (NO POINTS) thread's on here all the time and I would just like to say that I DO NOT UNDERSTAND ?
I have had 64 thru 74 GM vehicle's for 25 year's and have NEVER had one single problem , point's are all but trouble free and cost like $2 buck's per year to keep in good shape , the GM alternator with the regulator mounted on the fender is a bullet proof system it give's no trouble whatsoever it is easy on the drag and would charge with a string for a belt where as the one's with the internal regulator has to have the belt banjo tight and it still sqeel's and slip's , and not to mention the trouble they cause from either over or under charging ,
I was left beside the road twice in a GM vehicle both time's it was those HEI unit's , and I used to have a 80's S10 and those alternator's are nothing but trouble !!
I am keeping my point's and stock alternator forever !!

Re: getting rid of the voltage regulator

When I swapped motors I had to change alternators also and the new one was internally regulated. That's why mine was changed. For some it's a personal preference. I absolutely love my HEI and don't miss points whatsoever, but like I said, it's a personal preference. I've had it 3 years now with no problems at all. A lot of guys on here have had nightmarish problems with points and the swap solved them. I think it's cool that you are keeping yours stock; stick with whatever works for ya.

Re: getting rid of the voltage regulator

I switched 6 years ago, would never have points in anything again if I could choose. To each his own, but points belong in the trash can IMHO. If my truck could vote, it would say the same thing.

Re: getting rid of the voltage regulator

I've owned a couple of rigs with points, and sure, they work well, but I'm a child of the digital revolution and I like things with fewer moving parts. Simpler is better and HEI is simpler to me. Solid-state voltage regulators, too.

Wink Re: getting rid of the voltage regulator

I know that a HEI and 80's alternator is the normal thing in all chevy vehicle's nowaday's I just don't understand it ? all my friends have them too , I have a lot of fun when we go on trip's to tenn and one of them has to start pulling the dist beside the road to change those coil thing's , one friend of mine take's a spare of each part in an HEI with him , the alternator's will sometime's blister the belt's off going down the road , like someone else said whatever work's for you , I guess I'm old school , I ain't given up my dwell meter no time soon !!!
