factory cover plate over radio opening?

okay so i resently bought an '84 1/2 ton 2wd Chevy Short Box that is all original with 61,000 miles on it....and want to put a factory radio in it...what i was wondering is if anyone knows how the cover plate where the radio is supose to be, is supose to come off.....i was just thinking it was clipped on there... but i don't wanna break it seeing as it is an original OE part...any input would be great...here is a picture of the dash where the radio should be...

oh, and the second picture is the passager side of the truck....the truck in the background is the truck in my signature...the motor is soon coming out that and going into the new one...

Re: factory cover plate over radio opening?

if you take your dash panel off you'll see the cut out for radio opening in steel dash.and maybe see from the back side of dash panel how it's on there.it just takes a few minutes and it will have to come off and be cut out for your radio anyway.

IIRC, there is a metal clip or two held on with screws. Take off the bezel, and you will see them.

Re: factory cover plate over radio opening?

i shouldn't have to cut anything...its a cover plate and it feels like its loose as if it is clipped in place or held in place by something loosely....and if at all possible i'd rather not take too much apart so that i don't desturb too much, or take the chance of breaking anything...

Re: factory cover plate over radio opening?

It has a single screw right in the middle of the panel that holds down a clamp. Looks like this..

Don't know the screwhead size off hand but I just installed mine last week.

Re: factory cover plate over radio opening?

sweet! thanks for the picture!! that helps me out ALOT....i should be able to take that out easily without taking the whole trim panel out..i'll just take the plate blow the column out and then take that section of duct work out and should be able to reach it np.....
