65 LWB No Spark
Hey, I'm new to the forum here, and I got the wonderful oppourtunity to purchase a nice ol' 65 LWB. I've always wanted one, and I finally found one. 292 L6 and a classic 3 on the tree. Anyways, the guy I am buying it from, he bought it from a farmer (you know how rough they are on stuff), brought it home, fixxed her up a bit, and drove her for about 6 months. He then pulled the motor out to do some cleaning and put it a new clutch assembly. When he put it back in, it decided that it was no longer going to start.
I went over to make my down payment, and to look at it in general, and he had everything connected correctly. He did mention that ALL of the wires leading to the ignition switch in the dash were red in color. So he (and I) assume that someone (the farmer) was in there at one point, and decided to "fix" a few things. Anyways, now he says there isnt any spark, I havent actually checked for spark yet. It is getting fuel to the carb though, I can smell it, and the engine cranks over, and *almost* acts like it wants to fire, but it just wont do it. It is my suspicion that it has something to do with the distributor and ignition timing, or, the red wire array in the dash. I know there is supposed to be 2 12volt wires going to the switch, and I cant say right now if there is. Any help with this little bit o' info would be a great help, I really wanna drive her home! |

Re: 65 LWB No Spark
pull #1 spark plug and wire groung plug and check for spark. if their is spark dump gas into carb and if motor turns over fine and no fire install new plugs and retry it's easy to gas wash old plugs. good luck.

Re: 65 LWB No Spark
Run a wire from positive of the battery to the positive of the coil. This will let know if there is a problem with the wiring to the ignition switch or firewall wiring. Make sure the wire is easily disconnected as that will be the only way to shut it off if it starts. Also if there is any bad spot in you fuel or bad fuel pump line between the tank and the fuel pump, the carb may not be getting enough fuel to start. and have a fire exting. handy just in case!! Also a cheap upgrage is to get a electronic ignition from a junk yard or ebay, they usually run about $60 for the coil and distributor

Re: 65 LWB No Spark
Try some starting fluid.. If that won't make it start then you know there is another problem...

Re: 65 LWB No Spark
If the Dwell is too far open or always closed you will not get spark.
Good luck!!

Re: 65 LWB No Spark
I should have noted that it is an HEI distributor. Good news though, if I got it hooked directly to the battery so it does run.. until I unhook a wire I ran to the battery. It needs to have the fuse panel replaced, and some other wires.
I did some tuning and adjustment and now it runs pretty good. I still need a muffler though, I will be getting one tomorrow morning. Thanks guys!
