How do you get the steering arm off of a Dana 44 axle? I removed the 3 nuts and have beat it with the 3 lb but I cant get it to move. I have even soaked the seam with PB for 2 days no. Please help.

Hit it hard on the sides of the steering arm right next to where the studs go through. What you are trying to do is momentarily deform the holes so that the cones that are wedged in there holding the arm tight will pop out. Once the cones are loose the arm will fall right off.

Don't they make steering arm pullers you can rent at autozone? That is what we had to do and then used an impact.

it took me about 2 hrs to get one off this week,big hammer, lots of wd-40, and heat. I inlarged the holes before i put my new one on so i wouldnt go through the same thing if i need to remove it later.i made them just big enough to slide on/off. not the funnist thing to work on.

Just 1 other note, i found that the crush slevees wont just come out. I had to unscrew them like nuts. After being tightened down the stud formes threads on the inside of the sleeves.

I have never done this and I think I'm glad,they sound like a P.I.T.A. to remove.Thankfully the 71 already had a raised steering arm on it when I bought it.

I just changed mine last night. I soaked it with PB blaster and then took a 1" impact socket and with the nuts removed, put it over the stud so it sits flat on the arm, and hit it with a big f hammer a couple times. Then hit up and down on the arm. Repeat. Repeat. It came loose.

I will go give her hell again. Only problem is the axle is sitting on the trailer in storage so I cant use any air tools. I will head back out the shortley.

That's how we got mine off too. Well, that and a torch.

I did the blaster, torch and BFH method on one of mine... nothing worked. So I took a thin drill bit to the top of the cones (they wouldn't screw out either) and drilled a little material away from the cones. Came right off then. Don't go deeper than 1/8" though or your studs will be ruined too!

Do I drill closer to the stud or the arm? Do they scew out? Wouldn't a hammer and a chisle spin them out or has that been tried and failed?

I beat the piss out of a socket today and got nothing but a mushroomed socket. I soaked with PB again. I may have to hook up to the trailer and pull it to the house so I can use some air tools and such.

If they are slightly raised then try the chisel method to unscrew them. I tried it and it didn't work on mine. I simply took a cordless drill, small bit and drilled around the stud area and only about 1/8" deep. That removed enough tension on the arm to knock it loose. Once it's a little loose then you are good to go. Air tools won't do much for you unless you have a monster chisel... Here's what those washers look like under the surface... One is on its side and the other is upside down...

Thanks for the explination. It is currently raining and I know that where I keep the trailer stored, I is a mud pit out there as we got some good rain last night. I will go see what I can do as soon as I can. Thanks for all the great info.
