Dooh... Stupid me...
Yesterday, I decided the Blaze was due for a tuneup and I installed plugs, new wires, new cap, coil and rotor. I had decided to do everything right, so I anti-seized the plugs, dialectic greased the wires on both ends, routed the wires neatly and had everything looking good. The only issue (I thought...) was the cap hold-down screw at one o'clock on the distributor. It's really squeezed back against the firewall because the HEI cap is so big and I just couldn't get a screwdriver on it to lock it back down. I jacked around for about an hour trying different combos and finally cut a handle off a cheap flat-blade and wrapped the end with some black tape to get a grip and FINALLY it worked... Here I am feeling all proud of my self and fired it up. Damn it was missing. Sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders. Looked at the wires 4 times before I realized I had switched 6 and 8... Dooh... Anyway, it runs a lot better now with the firing order correct.

Re: Dooh... Stupid me...
you may want to wipe the die-electric stuff outta the cap end of the wires. It reallymakes them wanna pop off.

Re: Dooh... Stupid me...
Good point. But he cap I got from Summit has a hold down ring for the top of the HEI, so I think I'll be alright.

Re: Dooh... Stupid me...
I was changing the header gasket in my old 78 Camaro and when I was done I hurryed and fired it up. It sounded a little funny (quieter) but was running smooth. I looked under the hood and saw all the pass. side wires laying on the air cleaner. I was running a true 4 cyl.

Re: Dooh... Stupid me...
I put an engine in a chevy van one time, in through the side door. Not alot of fun. Put new plugs, wires and dizzy cap on. Tried to start it, and is all it would do is turn over, no fire. Re-checked wire install everything was fine. Tried too start again, same thing no fire. So I went through the procedure of bringing up #1 and pulling dizzy and re- checking dizzy install. Tried to start and same thing no fire. My buddy stuck his head in the passenger window, asking what else we could try. When I looked over to him to talk, I happened to see th rotor button laying on passenger seat. I installed that very little, but very important part, and it fired right up. So I know the humiliation you are feeling brother.

I keep this in the glove box and taught my girls to remember it for when I get old and senile and forget where I put it.

Re: Dooh... Stupid me...
been there.. did you know on an olds small block you can switch #'s 5 and 7 and the motor does not sound like it's missing at all? just a lack of power as it's only running on 6 cylinders. I do.
