Little help.... please

Hey everyone!!!

Need some input from you guys. (I've searched the forums)
My trucks getting hot, I've bypassed the heater core (PO) have a new thermostat (drilled a little hole in it)new sending unit, new molded lower hose,good upper, new radiator and my truck is pegged almost to the end of the scale, but... it's not boiling over coming out when it's this hot.
B4 I put in the t-stat it was cool cruising warm at lights etc. Tstat in warm all the time. Soo... the only things I haven't replaced is the gauge itself and the waterpump, the pump seems to be fine the return from the manifold into the radiator has good flow and increases w/ rpms. I'm confused.

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!!!!!

I've bought an aftermarket gauge and another water pump,but really would like to figure out what it is b4 I change all that out. Is there a way to check the gauge and the pump???
Ohh and I've pressure tested the system at 18lbs and seemed fine.

install the aftermarket guage and see if you've been chacing pink elephants.

I had the same problem as you last week. I did everything you described. First make sure your thermostat is opening I tested mine in a pot of boiling water to make sure it opened up. I fixed my overheating problem after replacing my fan clutch. Mine was shot....

Hey Brian didn't you say one time before that with the thermostat in, it get's hot when your cruising on the freeway, but not overheating around town? That sounds more like a water flow problem then an airflow problem to me. Oh, I re-read what you just said & I see now that it's always hot with the tstat in, sorry.

I suspect gauge... Let us know what you find out... or possibly a bad T-stat. FYI,...a vehicle will likely overheat on the freeway at highway speeds if no T-stat installed as the water flows thru the radiator too fast to cool.

Thanks guys,

I'm thinking pink elephants myself. thermostat was tested in water with a thermometer 180, clutch could be suspect. I'll do the gauge tonight and let you know what happens.

sounds like the guage, make sure if it is electric guage to use correct sender or you will get a false reading, my grand prix reads 210* but i checked it with a thermometer in the coolant and it runs at 180* because it has the new engine had different sender

I chased pink elephants myself once... I bought a sunpro gauge from Advance. I about crapped my pants when my brand new engine jumped to 230 degrees after 2 minutes or running. Brand new motor, radiator, wp, hoses (WITH springs), new fan, shroud, and t-stat. I chased and tinkered for a whole day with it before I thought, maybe my new fandango gauge is bad? YUP! Bad gauge. Installed new one, never went above 190 degrees.

Did you happen to put springs in your hoses? That sometimes makes a big difference. It's not really needed at all on the top one, but it helps keep the bottom one from collapsing.

I might have missed it in your last post, buy have you tried a new fan?

guys thanks for the comments!
I changed the gauge,drove it for about oh 1/2 hr never got over 192 mainly stayed around 185, it was about 15 degrees cooler (outside temp) so I'll know for sure tomorrow. I think it's fixed.
Got 2 car shows tomorrow to check out so I wanted it to be sure.

go to your local supermarket spend a couple of dollars for a good therometer to check the temp of your coolant

a bum guage is more likely than you think... be it in new cars or old ones. I've seen ppl spend big bucks trying to fix something that isn't broken.

Drove it all over today gents and didn't get over 195 in traffic (yesss...) it's fixed! 85-89 degrees outside today, so it was a bum gauge. I can tell you that b4 I mess w/ a cooling problem again the 1st thing to check will be te guage. Lots of nice cars/trucks today.!!!!! going tonight for the band and a bunch more cars etc.. home grilling some meat now!!

Perfect!! I was thinking 400 sbc on a rebuild that did not have 400 heads, for the steam relief holes. seen that happen before, but glad you are all fixed up!!!!
