Guys,
I have a 72 C10 with disk brakes on the front and I would like to tow my race car to the track. I haven't bought a trailer yet, but I was wondering about the rear end on my truck and the ability to handle towing a 3000 lb car on a 2 axle trailer.

I've read that leaf springs are better for towing, SO are there things I can do to my coil rear end (in addition to heavy duty shocks) that can stiffen it up some?

Get your trailer and hook-up, no problem I do it all the time. You might get the Air Ride air bag kit from Summit, I believe it's about $70.00

yup air bags, well the regular one but the one you stick inside the coils to help out.

Yep, that's the one's. Had 'em on a '69 Buick GS. They are the stuff for straighten'in out a line.

Gotta luv them ol' tricks.

Try out the bags inside the springs. They'll do the trick.

I think you'll be suprised how it'll do stock.. we used to tow a 8000ish lb. cattle trailer with my C20 with no trouble, though I realize yours is only a 1/2 ton.

i've towed my modded s10 blazer 4x4 behind it and towed my 5500lb boat with my c20, the thing rode better and was smoother than ever, dang strong suspension, felt good though, and real solid like

I've towed 4000 and 5000 pound loads many times with my 1/2 ton coil sprung truck -- off the bumper hitch. That was when I had manual drums. I have 3/4 ton rear springs though. It rode REALLY nice other than me sweating stops a bit. You'll be fine, these trucks were made to work after all.

Do keep an eye on your temp gauge. I'd install a tranny cooler if you don't have one also. Good luck.

A few years back I towed a 28 Wellcraft Coastal, with twin inboards, on a triple axle trailer(without brakes) from Ft. Myers, FL to Lake Texoma, OK. About 12,000 lbs was that rig. And I did it with a 1970 GMC 1/2 ton short step, stock coils and air shocks. I replaced a head gasket, master cylinder and all four wheel cylinders. But the rear suspension was just fine!

I put 3/4 ton coils in the back and all is well. Your car trailer probably has brakes so you'll be fine. I've hauled cars, trucks, boats and now a 2500lb camper.

Alexis, One question on the air bags as I would like to use them. How will they work when the air line connects right where our bolts go through the spring hold down bracket?
