Tire Storage question?

I have several 15 inch tires and rims from projects and for future roller needs.

What is the best way to store these tires? Some are mounted on rims others are not. Stack the flat on top of each other? Put them on their treads, lean them over to one side?

Is there anything I might want to spray/ coat/ or treat them with before storage.

Once a tire starts to dry rot a bit is there anyting that can be done to make it stop? or at least to make it look better?

thanks Thomas

Re: Tire Storage question?

I recommend storing upright indoors, out of the sun. Everytime I mess with a tire that has been stored on its side I have a bear of a time getting it to seat on a bead because it has lost its shape, and nothing is harder on tires than the sun.

Re: Tire Storage question?

Tie them up in a big garbage bag to keep the rubber from oxidizing so fast.

Re: Tire Storage question?

9 years of tire experience.....If they are modern radials, it doesn't matter a bit. Unless you are mounting them yourself and trying to air them up with a $19.99 roadside inflator that plugs into your lighter, the tire shop will have no problems airing them up. Whether you stack them up or on their sides, it just isn't going to matter! The weight of a vehicle can have an effect over time, but once they get warm from driving, they will be round again. The main thing is always the elements. Keep them out of the weather and the sunshine. Simple!!!!

Re: Tire Storage question?

Its actually quite easy. Put them on a pallet & ship them to Prattville, AL. I'll make sure they don't sit around & dry rot.

Would you prefer them to be with or w/out rims?

Great report, Thanks!

currently they are stored stacked in sets of four based on the matching rims (if mounted) I do have a few that are stored standing up so this gives me some direction on how to make sure they last. The tires are indoors in the back corner of a three sided barn(shed) so they are out of direct sunlight.

Thanks again,
Thomas

I wouldn't call my 15cfm 28hp 2 stage compressor "a road side tire inflator"

Yeah, even modern tires will collapse sideways...and it make them a bear to seat the bead

Keep them upright, out of the sun

Re: Tire Storage question?

if your rafters are close enough together in you shop set the tires upright over head then they out of the way as well, pluss they inside letting them sit outside in the sun is the hardest on them, as for making them easier to seat(ether) i use to do tires alot when i was in highschool a tire machine with the air injector makes quik work of it (all the tires we kept at the shop, over 50 tires are stores upright on racks)

I wish that my compressor was that one. I guess when I made that comment, I wasn't talking about you. My point was that 90+% of all people will have there tires mounted at a tire stort. The bottom air blasters on all older and newer tire machines can take a pancake thin tire and get it to seat quite easily. I guy could even run a 2x4 thru them and hang them up. I think we are all on the same page though that it's the elements that you have to watch out for more than anything else.
