Busted axle shaft removal on a Dana 44?

I will pull the diff cover this weekend and see what the deal is. But the axle shaft busted on the driver side and the PO pulled the shaft out, but left the broken piece.

I read last night that if there is no locker, then a coat hanger to push it out, or a shop vac to suck it out. I have a smaller shop vac, so I don't think it will have the juice to get the chunk out.

Anyone else have any tips or tricks without pulling the whole axle?

A lot depends on where and how the axle broke--spline twist?---, and as you already know what type of locker the diff may have or not have.

If its not stuck maybe a large hd magnet tool will pull it out OR you could remove the axle on the other side and drive it out with a long rod, if its just spidrer gears w/no locker.

I have no idea what's in there because I just bought the truck and drive it home. The axle shaft was laying in the bed and it looks like it broke just shy of the splines, but I'm not 100% sure how long the complete shaft is.

I will get it on stands and pull the cover this weekend, I just wanted to get an idea of what I might be in for. Did any '71 come with something in the front stock?

What do you mean,posi?Locker?
I have seen a few K20s that had 4:56s with factory lockers. There would/should be a decal for the lockers in the cab...IIRC.I dont know if they were listed in glovebox...
