Opinions on Long Block from..

Places like Autozone, Kragen etc.. Looking for 327 to 350 and there prices for 327 $1099 w/o core charge seem pretty fair and have a nice long 3yr warrenty. I am looking for as many opinions as possible on this. This will not be a high performance motor. Just a motor to get the old girl on the road again. All opinions are welcome. (On this subject only please .. )

Take a look at the GM Goodwrench motors online @ Pace performance Chevrolet, Gilbert Chevrolet and the like places on the internet when you punch up GM crate motors. Some offer free shipping and extended warranties.Nothin' like a GM Motor from GM! Good luck with whatever choice you make!

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

ok so Autozone may take my 350 as a core for the 327 they carry. Sweet. Not the orignal 327 it came with but dam close.

So What tools will I need for the long block?

What I'v got:

Wrenchs/Sockets/screw dirvers etc..
Dwell meter/Idel/Rpms
Timing Light
Compression tester
Torque wrench

Correct me if I am wrong but is there a cam break in period with a long block? Anything else I should do while I have the motor out?

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

I think any motor you buy from the places talked about will already be broken in. Most crate motors I've seen were ready to go internally; some just need dizzy, carb, headers, etc. to be complete.

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

If you just buy a long block, you sometimes need a harmonic balancer puller to pull yours and put it on your "new" motor.

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

Just for a thought, the Autozone in my town sells some absolutely worthless replacement parts. They all come with a warranty, and you'll use it, over, and over, and over. I have since determined I would rather pay 2X the price, and not have to replace the part again for several years, than buy the cheaper part, knowing I'll have to replace it in 1-2 years. I would not even consider buying a complete motor from them, based upon the quality of the parts I've bought from them in the past. Just something to consider.

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

I have never had luck with places like Autozone. My uncle bought a stock 350 crate engine from GM new for 1500.00 about 6 years age and runs like a top to this day. If my 402 ever fails beyond repair it will be a 502 crate engine from GM to replace it.

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

I bought an autozone 350 for my truck about 4 years ago. It's got 7K on it and doesn't burn oil and runs well. BUT when I bought it it was only $800 (after core) back then. I was a poor college student and $1,600 for the GM motor was just too much more for me back then. Now that the Advance price is over 1K (don't forget about taxes?) I'd hold off for an extra $500 and get the GMPP motor.

My 2 cents

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

Stay away from Autozone for anything execpt maybe fluids. You can get a better quality from a GM crate like others mentioned above or you can also go with a Jasper remanufactured.

Re: Opinions on Long Block from..

I looked into reman motors a couple years ago. Got scared off by them ALL telling me that most motors are .080 over bore blocks. I bought a used motor & had it rebuilt by a reputable builder. I felt much better with .030 over. Just be careful & ask for written info on them before you buy...
