Replacing Water Pump
I have a 71 GMC w/ a 350ci and a water pump thats leaking hardcore. Im not sure if it is the original motor. Is there a number somewhere on the block where I can find out what year it is, so I can buy the correct water pump, Id hate to buy the wrong one assuming its the original block. Or should I just remove the old one bring it in to Part Source or where ever and see if they can match it?
Any advice would be appreciated Ps. I know that picture doesnt help much, but thats what I have to work with |

Re: Replacing Water Pump
by the looks of it you have a long water pump (vs short water pump)
all old small blocks have the same water pump holes in the block, so tell em you need water pump gaskets for a 72 350 or so, the year doesn't matter as long as it's old. Last edited by matthufham; 06-18-2007 at 04:21 PM. |

Re: Replacing Water Pump
You have a long water pump. So when you got to the parts store just ask for a pump for a 73 chevy truck with a 350. Dont ask for a 72 you will get a short pump.
As for what year it came out of. If you are lucky it still has the engine code stamped on the pad under the alternator on the block on the passenger side. Get the number and post a thread with the numbers for a breakdown of the numbers. Last edited by Aarons72s; 06-18-2007 at 04:29 PM. |

Re: Replacing Water Pump
I agree with the above stated about the year of the block does not matter it more depends on the pulley set-up and the case of it being long or short style.
Reverse rotation for serpetine set-ups and such I also agree that it looks to be a long style pump from the pic so go with the 73 & up v-belt pump as it will have the correct rotation and you will be ready to roll. ofcoarse after you reinstall the grill, bumper, and headlight. Hope it helps RJ22... |
