Fuel Gauge ?
I have an aftermarket harness in my truck and was wondering if the factory fuel gauge sees 12 volts constant (with ign. in "on" position).
Are the 2 connections on the back of the gauge simply "hot" and "ground"? So the basic wiring for this would be the wire from the sending unit to the gauge. The sending unit is grounded to the chassis (using fuel cell from "fuelcellguy"). The gauge gets a ground and do you just tap into run from the sending unit to the gauge with a 12 volt source? Hope this all makes sense.....I'm not the brightest electrical guru! I did do a search and read some of the "how too" links, etc... but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Re: Fuel Gauge ?
I don't think you can just "tap" into the line, that will give you 12 volts constantly and defeat the purpose of the sender.
The way a factory fuel gauge is wired is as follows: The fuel gauge has three leads going to it, one hot, one ground, and one from the sender which contains a rheostat or potentiameter which goes to ground(tank is grounded). I don't know what your aftermarket gauge or wiring looks like.

Re: Fuel Gauge ?
Do you have a picture of the connections on your new gauge?

Re: Fuel Gauge ?
I'm using the factory fuel gauge and though I don't have it with me, it seems that the flat harness (not sure what to call it....flat blue laminated thing that connects to gauges and dash light) on the back of the cluster only attaches to the gauge at 2 points.
So what does the fuel gauge (factory) need to function properly?

Re: Fuel Gauge ?
There is a single wire that used to go to your factory fuel tank sender. Hook that wire up to your new sender(in the fuel cell), plug the harness into your gauge cluster, and everything should work.

Re: Fuel Gauge ?
Oh and IIRC I believe the gauge is grounded through the cluster so you will only have two leads, 12v+ and the wire from the sender.

Re: Fuel Gauge ?
if you use the factory printed circuit/ factory plug to apply the power and signal from your sending unit all you need to do is get the signal from the sending unit to the dash and it will be fine.
