Header Clearance Pics for Jakes68GMC
Here is some pics of the clearance..The driveshaft isnt on but it's set in place to show the clearance...See the headers, all ready starting to rust!
Looks like a tight fit squeezing the headers in between the motor and frame but they fit with a inch or 2 from the frame to the headers.. Shot from the transfer case looking forward... There is some clearance from the front driveshaft This is a shot to show clearance between the headers and the bolt for the shackle. |

I am sorry, but you guys are crazy with this infatuation with headers. All they do is create problems and alot of heat, by the way. Stock style manifold will do every thing you need an exhaust to do, with much easier install. It's not gonna turn 10's in the 1/4 guys!!

I have to agree with eegdell 100%. I too am a header hater. The HP you gain from headers is like a tornado in a tea cup. The hassles of dealing with heat burnt spark plug wires, fried starters, and constant exhaust leaks aren’t worth the hassle.
First thing I did when I got my ’78 over 10 years ago was to ditch the headers. When I installed the 454HO, I searched high and low for the correct exhaust manifolds to use to avoid the typical header problems. I did use headers on my ’68 GMC’s bored and whored 396 but I was just a 22 years old punk when I built it. I bet I have replaced the collector gaskets and manifold gaskets as much as the oil when it was driven often.

Re: Header Clearance Pics for Jakes68GMC
Well I appreciate your input guys, but I'm still going to run headers. I don't want to deal with having head pipes bent up special to the ramhorns (already had quite the trouble with that for the V6), and then you have to find a decent set of uncracked ram horns somewhere.
It just seemed like headers would be the easiest and cost-effective way to run the motor with the existing exhaust. Last edited by JAKES 68GMC; 06-20-2007 at 09:19 AM. |

Headman used to make a 4x4 header I don't know if they still do but I have a set on my 72. The collector flanges end up about even with the back edge of the block. They don't extend down near the shackles and I don't have any problems with clearance. I found the part number hed-69230.

Yep and they have a ball and socket type flange so no collector gaskets to leak! |
