First start attempt
So after hookin everything up to try and start my 260 I6, i tried to start it, obviously. Im assuming it takes quite a while for fuel to be pumped from the tank to the carb, but how long? After turnin it with the starter for abut 30 seconds however, a little smoke started coming from the front of the motor. I looked and there was a little bit of coolant sitting on the block right below the 90 degree elbow that turns from horizontal to straight up, right where the thermostate is located. Im assuming this gasket is bad where the elbow bolts to the head, so does anyone know where i can get a new gasket for this? Thanks...
BRAD

Re: First start attempt
Almost anyplace that sells aftermarket car parts, they're common as dirt.
Around here, Napa, Schuck's, CarQuest, Baxters, all have them in stock, usually more than one to choose from. It's a simple gasket, you could buy sheet stock and cut out your own. |

Re: First start attempt
when i run mine completely out of gas i put some in the tank and pour a little bit strait in the carb. always works for me. little tip, dont pour it in while somebodies turning it over, i almost blew myself up doing that. and yes i am smarter than that, i dont know what i was thinking. as for the gasket, i put a new one on when i changed my intake and all that and for some reason it still leaked and i think your supposed to do this anyway but i put a little rtv on the gasket and put it back on and solved that problem. hope this helps.
thanks and good luck, John

Re: First start attempt
yeah, be sure to use RTV on both sides of the gasket.
As far as fuel, it takes me between 5 to 10 seconds of cranking to get fuel to fill the filter if it was empty. If you don't have a clear inline filter, I would recommend one so you can monitor this. |

Re: First start attempt
I dont have an inline filter, and might get one, but i was looking at all the fuel lines after trying for a while, and the main line that goes from the rubber line on the pump to the rubber line right by the cab floor is pretty rusty, at least on the outside. While turning it over, there is no air or anything being pumped out the fuel line right where it goes into the carb, should their be? Other than that, i think i may need some new fuel lines, as mine are pretty shabby lookin. Thanks...
