I agree with the first assesment about the temp sender. The second, you asked what that does. Currently nothing... but if it was hooked up, I'm fairly positive that is for the oil pressure gauge.

Firewall pic- looks like part of your oil pressure line to the gauge, but you may be missing the line to the back of the block. Are you reading any oil pressure?

Must have been typing at the same time

Check the classified, billsbowtie might have, or various other guys. Saw one not to long ago... J.

That's the great thing about this board, no one seems to mind any questions. You may have a faulty temp. transmitter, there are three other locations you can mount that thingy, if you don't like where its at.... J.

I would guess that the thermostat housing is off of a later model vehicle. That sending unit is more likely to be a computer sensor that tells it when the engine has "warmed up" because the thermostat has opened. There would probably have been another in the "normal" place in the head, that would have been connected to the gauge/idiot light.

The oil line would have to be going to a mechanical gauge inside the cab, not an electronic one, right? Oh and I agree on the bracket bolt.... get one in there.

I agree. That housing looks Identical to the one on my '81 GMC. I dont think there could be much use for it on your truck.

Re: Probably dumb questions but can I get some help?

You can leave that housing, If you don't mind installing an aftermarket gauge pod with water temp, oil pressure and volt meter, all the necessary fittings will be in the kit. I bought one from the local parts store. My temp sending unit is in the driverside head, up towards the front. Use teflon tape on it when you put it in, same for the oil pressure sender.

Re: Probably dumb questions but can I get some help?

I got a new oil line for the gauge at NAPA. Had to use an adapter fitting at the block though.
