ring and pinion swap progress
just thought I would post about my progress with swapping my ring and pinion. I decided to film some short clips and upload them to youtube.
first, I had too little carrier preload. this was with just the stock (thick, single piece) shims. watch how long this carrier spins when I push it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-RyFBZWSYM then, I had too much carrier preload. this was after adding a 0.02" shim to either side. the carrier stops almost as soon as my hand leaves it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8bLFqSdgYI this looks like a more reasonable amount of preload. this was with a 0.02" shim on the left and 0.01" shim on the right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PgMVP596mw then I took the carrier back out and installed the pinion and yoke, tightening until I had a small amount of pinion preload: (this video is still being processed) next, I put the carrier back in, locked the yoke in place with a 24" crescent wrench, and measured the gear backlash with my machinist's dial. I had about 34 thousandths worth of backlash, which is way to much: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO2HuZH26iA this was so much backlash that it creates a ton of coast side gear noise: (this video is still being processed) to reduce the backlash, we need to move the ring closer to the pinion. this is done by moving the 0.01" shim from the right side to the left side of the carrier. this resulted in about 22 thousandths of backlash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nYed9N32Zw this is a move in the right direction, but I need to get down to about 10 thousandths of backlash. more to come later |

Re: ring and pinion swap progress
bringing this one back from the past...
is $150 a decent price for a guy to set up my posi unit in my 12 bolt? Without experience I would rather not ruin my rear... I would be buying the bearing kit on my own.. thanks for anyone that has info and thanks for posting your videos..

Re: ring and pinion swap progress
if he knows what he is doing i'd say that's a decent price. I have seen first hand how easy it is to get it wrong, and how quickly doing so will chew through a gear. You would spend more than that on a 20 ton shop press and a super shim kit anyway, so if this is a one time thing you will actually be saving money.

Re: ring and pinion swap progress
I decided to find the right set of gears already installed. A board member had a corp10 front axle and I just welded new perches to my new found rear axle. Cheaper than setting mine up....

msgross -- not a bad idea. once they are setup right they appear to last about forever.

Re: ring and pinion swap progress
I set the front and rear differentials up on my truck. That was a fun job.It really wasnt difficult, just requires time and precision.I think it took me an afternoon to do both diffs. And that was starting with no shims prior to me taking the ring and pinion out so I had to try out a few shim combinations first to get things right..with a good manual explaining things and the right tools, you should be alright.
