anyone used an electric radiator fan from ebay? (procomp 16")
Hey guys,
Last time I looked into electric radiator fans I seem to remember them being too expensive (~$100). However, I just noticed on ebay that a Procomp 16" fan is only $25. Anybody have any luck with these? If not, I'll give it a go and report back with my experience. |

yeah, not sure if i want a single 16" or double 10" fans. I must admit the systems administrator (computer geek) in me wants fault tolerance just for the sake of it

Do you think 2 12 inch fans would work?

Re: anyone used an electric radiator fan from ebay? (procomp 16")
A couple of thoughts from someone who's considering going with electric fans but hasn't done so yet:
Will you need an alternator upgrade to handle the extra amps? Is there sufficient clearance between the water pump and radiator? Have you priced all the fan controls/relays. You will be using a fan shroud, won't you? Suggest not mounting the fan using the nylon ties that go through the radiator fins (front to back). Fan startup torque sometimes twists the unit and causes holes in the radiator tubes. Use an external bracket or shroud to mount the fan(s). Do you have A/C? If yes, then I'd suggest using 2 "puller" fans, each with it's own thermostat. If you have a 185 degree thermostat inside the engine, set one of the fan thermostats for about 195 degrees, the other for about 205 degrees and make they both come on when the AC compressor kicks on. I think I read puller fans are a little (10-15%) more efficient than pusher fans, moreso if you use a fan shroud. So if you decide to "push", buy them bigger, then reconsider question #1.

Re: anyone used an electric radiator fan from ebay? (procomp 16")
I had a 16" procomp that I bought from a friend for $5 and I used it for over 2 years until I striped the car. Sold it to a friend and he has been using it for 3 years now with no problems. Note this is with no fan shroud and a constant on power from the key. I bought 2 of the 14" and going to fab up a shroud. For temp I'm going to wire it up the same way until I get some extra cash and decide what kind of switch I want to get. But I guess it is always easier to say cost more must be better.

thanks for the tips guys. as for the shroud, i just finished up a welding course at the local community college, so I'll be (attempting to) fab up my own shroud as well.
