This is not the direction I wanted to go...

Since I discovered that 2 cylinders have low compression and 1 has zero compression, I started tearing down this motor for removal. I will be building another 350 to drop in. I have the block, crank and heads back from the machine shop. Really I've had it all since last fall. So this weekend I am going to get started. I can't promise how quickly it will come together, but hopefully all goes well. Wish me luck

I went to freshen mine up here a while back and found a nice big crack in my block. I got another one though. Good luck with your build.

Re: This is not the direction I wanted to go...

It depends on how much you want to do. The ones I've built, I had the machine shop install the cam bearings (simply because it's a PITA), install the rings on the pistons and the pistons on the rods, and install the freeze plugs, and I did the rest (aside from the actual machine work.) A ring compressor and a valve spring compressor are about the only tools I remember buying for the purpose of engine work.

It's not as if there's any really intricate, difficult steps, just a lot of little things to keep track of. Biggies are to keep everything nice and clean, take your time, and have a plan. Probably for your first time out, you'd want to find a good book to help guide you, plus you get torque sequences/specs, and helpful reference stuff like that.

I am actually considering this on my 307. Is there any books you would recommend for it?

I believe Billa posted a list of every tool possibly needed for a project of building an engine. The list may be in FAQ. Have fun
