Antique plates

I have heard that in Texas you can actually put plates on a vehicle that is over 25 years old with plates that match the year it was made with a special sticker. Does anyone know if this is true? I have a set of 68 Hemisfair plates that I would love to put on if I can.

yes you can go to the court house and take the old plates with you, register it as an antique or classic.

Yep. In Tennessee you can register your truck or car get new tags and carry them with you in the vehicle...but use vintage tags. Ive had a NOS tag on my '72 Nova for about 8 yrs now.

I dunno if you guys have ever seen the hemisfair plates but they really look cool. I dont have a pic of mine but here something I found on the internet. I would love to run these plates if I could hehe.

In Alabama you can do the same. I have went to the court house and reissued my 72 plates.

as long as the plate is the year of the truck 68' plates on a 68' truck, take them to the courthouse with you, fill out the form for either an antique plate or a classic plate, and they will just want to see the plates you brought. they will give you a very small tag to put on the licence plate bolt with the plate. I can not remember the cost right now, but I believe that the antique plate route is cheaper.

I had antique vehicle plates on my truck. I did not drive it everyday, just every now and then, and I never had a problem with the cops. the plate is good for 8 years, and is only a rear plate (if you use the one supplied by the state) and you also do not have to have a texas inspection sticker with this plate. the plates go out march 08 and they are prorated when you buy them.

There's a shop near the train station in the stockyards in fort Worth that has a TON of antique plates. I got a set of '72s, just in case I move to Texas at some point

I was at the tax office getting the stickers for my 93 GMC the other day and was asking about the same thing. They gave me a form to fill out and there is a $15 charge plus the sticket fee. and that is every year not just a setup fee. I would love to find some plates for my 70.

And I forgot to mention you will have to take them in so they can be inpected. and they will also run a long check to make sure the plates are clear.

I run some '69 Texas Truck plates. If the '68 plates were made for both trucks and cars, then they will probably require you to have truck plates. I found my NOS set on E-bay for about $45-50. The people at the tax office were really helpful in walking me through the steps.

I run those exact same plates. You have to pay a $15 yearly fee to run them on top of normal registration fee. I registered it as a classic even though it's an antique because they'll make you use those antique plates and you can only drive to meets and shows or to have your truck repaired. I drive mine all the time.

I got collector plates last year, so I don't have to ever register it again, but old plates would be cool.

I didn't know you could run the Hemisfair 68 car plates, I ended up using the 68 truck plates. It's so easy to do I don't know why more people don't run the year of manufacture plates.

Im running a set of 1970 Texas Farm Truck plates. They were blue and white so they match my truck. I dont have the farm truck privlages but you can still use them and its $15.00 like the other guys said. I have a second set if anyone is interested in buying them.
