S 10 or Camero 5 speed in our Truck
I have been told that I can put a 5 speed overdrive in my boys 70 shortbed c10. Is it true that the s10 and camero 68-? can be used and what list of part do I need to accumulate for the change over from the th350 trans.
Fly wheel clutch trans pilot bushing?? clutch pedal and linkage from stich pu 69-70 Anything wrong with my thinking. Ed ke6bnl@juno.com

I installed a 96 chev 1/2 ton 5 speed into my 72 a few years ago. It is probably similar to the S10 in that it is aluminum housing, hydralic clutch setup that is really sweet. Not recommended for drag racing but for everyday driving it is super.
Things to consider: Got to set up clutch pedal and under dash linkage to activate the hydralic clutch master cylinder---must be horizontal into the cyl. The newer style 5speed has an intergrated bellhousing --remove the old stuff from the engine block back and install the new stuff. Support the new trans with an "automatic cross memeber" at it's tail. May need high hump floor with new hole as the shifter mounts forward of stock 67-72 stuff. Will probably need a re-sized drive shaft which is kind of expensive but~~`. Depending on year, you may or may not have a speedo gear in the trans verses electronic pickup----I haven't solved that problem yet!! I bought the whole trans asm including clutch, pressure plate, throwoutbearing asm, clutch master cyl and hose, rear trans universal housing for like $650. Be aware that they have a reputation for bearing noise---check good first then use Mobil1 synthetic dextron trans fluid. Try Dave Hammonds in crab Orchard, Ky @ 606-355-7327 (he parts them out by the 100's) End result ===drop about 150lbs in weight, drop about 1,000 rpm at highway speed, increase gas mileage from 14 to 18-20. dont use 1 from s10. they are for 6 cyl and have 1 in input shaft and use small clutch. use 1 from camaro/firebird. they have 1 1/8 input shaft and larger clutch. ive been running 1 for 3 years with no problems.

Main thing to remember on the Camaro one, is the mount is not horizontal...the whole tranny is turned 18 (or so) degrees, and you'll have to fab a mount on your ceoss member to make up for it.
Also, the T5 tranny is not that strong, there is a reason GM never put one behind a 350. |

you dont have to fab a crossmember. you use the camaro bellhousing and the tranny does sit on an angle towards the drivers side. if you use a regular bellhousing the shift lever will be in the passenger seat and you would have to fab a crossmember.
