is there such a thing as a brake drum puller?
I am gettin tired of beating the @$^(% of my brake drum rotors in order to get them to come loose. I can't seem to find anything resembling a brake drum puller online, but I figure it should be pretty easy to fabricate my own tool. I could start with a 3 jaw puller from harbor freight and just make new arms for it which will fit around an 11" brake drum.

I have disc at all four corners, so I don't know if this is true for our trucks, but do the drums have two threaded holes on the face? I seem to recall that you could put a bolt in those holes and as you tighten it, it would push against the axel and force the drum off.....

Yeah, they make em. You could borrow mine if you were closer. I googled it and found these:

Have you tried adjusting the shoes inward? This should allow the drums to be removed easily. If they are on that tight chances are good that something is wrong.

Re: is there such a thing as a brake drum puller?
I once had a buddy that was restoring a mini in his garage.
it stood on jackstands for 4 years and he went through about 20 brake drums looking for ones that fit correctly. He could never get a set that would fit. One day I went over for a couple of beers to BS with him, and he told me about the situation with the drums and showed me a few of the sets he had aquired over the years. I looked at the brakes, reached inside the car, released the parking brake and bang, drums he had all fit..

Re: is there such a thing as a brake drum puller?
I rented a big jaw puller to get my drum off. One came off easy and the other was NOT coming off. The shoes were backed off too. When it broke loose it sounded like a rifle shot. Never had to do that before but if it happens again I'll rent the puller again, about $12.

front brakes rear brakes?? if its the front drum brakes you do know that you take the hub and wheel bearings off for the brake drum to come off you do that by removing the grease cover than the cotter pin then the cast;e nut // old school way do brakes and grease front wheel bearings at the same time

I beat on a rear drum for about 20 minutes and didn't budge it. The adjuster was frozen so I couldn't loosen it. I got a mapp gas torch and GENTLY and EVENLY heated the drum face. It expanded just enough to allow me to tap it gently with a hammer and start sliding it off. I had to reapply heat a couple of times but it came off much easier. Use gloves!! |
