Anyone ever...?

...run rear bags in the stock location with lowering blocks and a big notch?

Re: Anyone ever...?

Yes you can run the bags in the stock spring location on a trailing arms truck. That type of mounting won't allow the truck to get down very low though. If you want to keep the bed floor stock, you can run the bags on the arms and use a small C-notch and it will get down nicely.

You can weld a lower bag plate to the trailing arm and an upper bag plate to the bottom of the frame rail. That way you will have the mounting locations and bolt holes to aid in securing the bag to the vehicle.

Here's an image of a truck that I built for a customer using some of the techniques listed above. There was an existing box tube notch that was horribly installed, so I cleaned it up and made a notch top that would strengthen the frame and add some serious cosmetic enhancement as well. There's a three gallon and a five gallon tank mounted between the rear axle and the fuel cell, and the liquid filled gauge fits back there with the other components nicely. The compressors were also color matched and installed on the outside of the rear frame rails. ( not shown )

This truck was a long bed so it gave me the ability to run the bags off the longer trailing arms without interference from the frame rail, bed cross sills, exhaust, etc. Short beds will be slightly different.

I also made a longer pan hard bar that connected to the bottom of the frame in the factory location and extended all the way across to the rear inside of the passenger side trailing arm. That way there was very little axle shift through the range of suspension travel.

Hope this give you some ideas to roll with on your project. If you have any questions about the parts used, please feel free to contact me and I can provide you with the information and parts needed.

Re: Anyone ever...?

Funny that YOU were first to respond because I just finished installing a KP notch Nice piece. I asked the question not really to see IF it can be done, but if it HAS been done. Well it has now

I don't want to lay frame and I realize I probably won't use the entire notch at this point but I knew I needed more than a C. With the bags fully deflated and 2.5-3" blocks (need to go measure mine again), the rear-end will be well into that notch. I'll know how far once I make some room for the driveshaft... And I may run a Camaro rear swaybar in there too, so there's plenty of room for that.

Anyway, the reason I asked is because I can't air it out yet because It'll sit on the drive shaft and I was hoping to see roughly how low it'll go.

Here's what I did (don't laugh at my temporary cedar bump-stops )

Re: Anyone ever...?

I loosely based my design on the fact that this truck you posted appears to be sitting on-or-close-to the trailing arms (frame on arms). But with NO lowering blocks. So I figured add 2.5" of compressed bag in there and compensate with blocks; it should end up in the same place.

Re: Anyone ever...?

How funny because I was going to post those same images and give you some of the same points. You're correct that the trailing arms on the truck are bottomed out on the frame rails and there were no lowering blocks installed. That's because we set it up to be bottomed out in the notch at that height on 22's to meet the stance the customer was looking for.

If I was to stretch the notch taller and throw some lowering block in there then it'd been even lower. In your case you could add a 3" block and that would lower the trailing arms down and help provide some clearance for the bags to go on the arms, below the frame rail.

Or you could just wait and get a cantilever system from us and call it a day .... ( had to get a free plus in there for our up and coming kit. )

Re: Anyone ever...?

I figure I'm gonna be about 5" into the 8" notch with the current setup. That gives me room for the swaybar in there. When I put bigger wheels on I could always add some more block if I need to (keeping everything above the scrub line).

I appreciate the feedback. Your work looks outstanding and I love the notch! I think I'll be plenty low. Just need a dropmember now

I'd still be interested in seeing if anyone else is setup this way.

That's my personal C10 that I've been working on for some time now. The website was an old site that I had up about the project. Maybe I'll have to get another website going for my trucks, and the ones I've built, to help share info and pictures with other people on here.

Re: Anyone ever...?

mine is setup very similar. I built new trailing arms to give me a little more clearance though. and I cut my notch down to 6.5"

Re: Anyone ever...?

I personally would mount the bag on the bar not in front of the axle. And be carefull mounting them on the side of the trailing arm. My trailing arms twisted.

did you mount them in place of the springs, or make a mounting tab and mount them on the side of the trailing arm?

Re: Anyone ever...?

hey clint - your personal truck - the silverr one - is the rear window flush-mount. if so, can you provide more info? this is something i would actually like to do with both my rear and front windows and would love to hear/see some guidance. last time i looked in our FAQ here, there wasn't anything on how to pull it off, so .... heh ... you know ... (sorry to go OT!)

I mounted them further forward, inside the frame rails, in the center of the arms. After about a year and a half it twisted and the bag rubbed the exhaust and blew out going 65 on the highway. Thats when i backhalfed and four linked it.

What bracing did you do to the trailing arms when you moved the bag mounting location?

This is why I followed the keep-it-simple mentality. Nothin wrong with more complex set-ups, but I think I'll be plenty low. Any pics of your's Bagged74?

That is a good suggestion to watch out for. The trucks I did with the bags on the arms I made sure to keep the bags centered on the arms as best as possible. I think ECC used to sell a trailin arms re-enforcement kit as well, but it could be by someone else as well.
