Re: black rtv or red?
I personally have quit using RTV all together. I now use only Mega Grey Import gasket maker or Mega Black gasket maker. I have had much better results with these and they don't stink like RTV.

Re: black rtv or red?
The prematex ultra series has been the best I've found to date. Its alot stickier and more duarble then the standard RTV. It comes in black and high temp copper.

Re: black rtv or red?
For engine assembly, I have shifted over to the NAPA "Right Stuff" adhesive. It is an outstnding product, in my book.

Re: black rtv or red?
Clean the intake bolts really well and use a Teflon sealer like you use one water pump bolts. Then run a bead of black sealer on the front and back of the block and toss the rubber ones that come with the set. Add the intake gaskets nice and clean and use no sealer on these. Drop on intake and torque to spec. Once you drop it on there's no removing or you will have to clean the black silicone off and start over.

Re: black rtv or red?
The high temp is mainly for the exhaust. Your intake should never see those kinds of temps.

Re: black rtv or red?
Watch out for RTV...room temperature vulcanizing...products. Some are for automotive use. The problem is that as they cure, they can corrode the surfaces on which you put them, i.e., using them around a windshield and letting it contact the metal of the body. This may not affect any of the engine work, but the manufacturers specify what you should be using for a given task.

Re: black rtv or red?
"rite stuff"
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...egoryCode=2132 It ussually runs about 11-13 a can. I have found it at advance auto and napas. I quit using silicone rtv when I found out about this stuff.

Re: black rtv or red?
You shouldn't have to give the gaskets any coating. If you get the Fel-pro ones they are designed so seal with no silicone.,also it makes the gaskets tend to "slide out" when you torque them. Also i never use silicone on the bolts. GM has always used a Teflon sealer like the plumbers white stuff to seal the bolt threads.
