after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

ive got a problem with my truck. its got a 350/4-spd , holly 4bbl 600cfm. after it runs for about 15-20 minutes it sputters and goes dead like its out of gas, but i know its not. i can pump it a few times and it starts and just dies again. temp, oil pressure, everything is normal. it will start right up and run after an hour or so. i have no idea what is wrong. it has a brand new carb, intake, distributor, coil, and fuel pump. i just changed the plugs and wires and oil 2 months ago and it hasent been driven much since. i cant figure out whats wrong with it. please help.
thanks,
John

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

Sound like a fuel flow issue. Have you replaced the filter, and checked the line for correct flow? I used to have a VW that sat for a long time, I found many clogged fuel filters, and it was rust breaking free in the tank and getting sucked into the fue line, clogging the filter. Was the truck just idleing, or out driving?

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

One more thing! Its rare, but I had a coil that had drained all the oil out of it, and it would get hot, and my coil would short out temporaly. As soon as it got cool, the coil would work again. Are you running a HEI, points, or a electronic ignition?

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

let me guess it only runs with the choke partially open/closed right?? it sounds like your carb may need to be re-tuned, which is difficult on holleys. i would personally switch to an edelbrock. i haven't had any problems at all since i have switched to edelbrocks and they are so much easier to tune than a holley.

I had the same problem once before, I ran a hose straight to a gas can from the fuel pump just to see if it was the fuel line pluged up and it was...

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

we need to know which distributor you have.. If you have an HEI the modulator might be bad and when it gets hot it shuts down and after it cools it will work again.. Or a bad coil like rob said. I had one leak down on a truck I had. It used to cut out as I was driving and sometimes just studder a bit and then shut down. Finally it just stopped working all together.. When I took the coil off I was able to shake it and hear the insides banging around in there..

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

it has a HEI distributor. im pretty sure its not the coil because it was doing this before i changed from the points to the HEI. the holley is an electric choke. the truck was sitting for 4 years before i got it. the tank was completely gone. before i ever tried to start the truck i took the tank out and drained it and the gas was dark brown and the pickup line on the sender was rusted off and in the tank. i took the tank off my 62 parts truck which was in a lot better shape and put it on there. i wouldent doubt fuel flow issue. i changed the filter not to long ago. ill check all the fuel lines and replace all the rubber line. a friend of mine has a 65 swb fleet and he said he had a similar problem with the fuel line collapsing when it got hot. he said just put a spring around the hose behind the fuel pump. ive never heard of that but its worth a shot.
thanks ,
John

Fuel Pump or a leak in the line between the tank and pump.

i thought that was in the distributor? if it is then i dont think thats it. it was doing it before i switched to the HEI.

Trying loosing the gas cap also, tend to think fuel problem, because you say it will fire again by pumping the pedal. When it dies take the air cleaner off, shine a flashlight down the carb open the throttle and see if you get a good spray of fuel.

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

i checked and its getting good flow on the carb side. i was planning on moving the tank to a cell in the bed anyway so i guess ill just do that. i can get a 25gal cell for $200 with sender. ill just put that in the bed and run new lines. i think it needs that bad. like i said the tank from the 62 was better but still trashy and rusty as hell inside. anyways i dont wanna ruin my new carb with that trashy ****.
thanks all,
John

Do the holleys have the filter in the side of the carb too?

hey baddawg, nice setup. is that a custom tank? if not where did you get it? that looks great. my holley did not have the filter in the side.
thanks,
John

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

It came from Brothers. Had to do a little custom work for shackle mounts on the frame 3/4 4x4 w/leaf springs and added a crossmember behind the tank. Drawback to the tank is the capacity.

I think a stock tank behind the seat holds 18 gallons.

Re: after 15 minutes of running it sputters and goes dead

I'd guess vapor lock (fuel boiling in the line) or gas tank cap not breathing.
