fixing worn out seat???

my factory bench seat looks wonderful, its been recovered before, the only problem is that the drivers side sinks in a lot more than the middle or passanger seat. Obviously from the 21 year old seat springs.

whats the easiest way to fix this problem besides getting a new seat? I think i'm going to stay with the factory bench.

Re: fixing worn out seat???

What WE did with mine about 3 years ago was take the seat out and apart, all the way, then reattach some of the broken springs (the ones on the corners tend to break) and we also took one or two springs from the middle and beefed up the driver's corners and front. It feels great and has held up very well. It sucks when I actually ride in my truck because the passenger side still sags

FWIW, the LMC kit is a waste of time. You can use the goofy little rods for extra support, but not much, and the whopping 2 inches of foam is worthless. Don't waste your time.

Re: fixing worn out seat???

it may not be the spring it may be the foam, go to LMC and get new foam, not cheap but well worth it.

Re: fixing worn out seat???

wow good thread! I have my seat outta my truck and am trying to figure out what to do. I want to get it recovered but have no idea what that will cost. My seat kills my back bad because of how its worn out. I figureered i will have them do new foam too and maybe shape it alittle. I was goona get a kit because i don't like others working on my truck. I also thpought about newer seats but don't really feel like fabbing brackets.

Cliffsta: you could throw some of the springs from the seat ion your parts truck onto your seat to make it better all around. just an idea

Actually, the inverse. I'll be using the seat from the parts truck b/c it has the folding back (and mine does not) so I'll take the good guts from my seat and put them in that frame, plus new foam.

But none of that matters, my truck has to run first, which should happen tomorrow

I agree, this could be a good thread. It'd be nice for some of the "big boys" to chime in with what they've done seat-restoration wise.

Re: fixing worn out seat???

I have a box of new gm seat springs for these trucks. Once and a wile i will use a few, they make a heck of a differenct when you pull out those streached and broken springs and put some new ones in.

Re: fixing worn out seat???

I would get the new springs, BUT I would also look at putting a heavy piece of rubber between the springs and the foam. The seats have tendency to CUT the foam along the edge where it meets the seat frame and that allows that side to swallow up the driver. If you get a heavy rubber (something like a heavy floor mat or truck bed mat) and cut it to fit the seat frame and put it in between the springs and foam then reattach the springs, it stiffens up the seat and makes it stand up longer.

Re: fixing worn out seat???

First take the front seat/floor mounting bolts out and then pull the seat adjuster and slide the seat forward, now get a 12" long 3/8" drive extnsion and a socket. Take the bracket loose from the floor. One the floor bolts are out, then the whole assembly comes out of the cab, now take the seat adjusting brackets loose from the seat itself---IF NEEDED.

Thumbs up Re: fixing worn out seat???

I'm in the middle of re-building a stock seat for my 71 C-10 & I didn't know what I was going to do for parts, luckily we have a Boardmember who is very knowledgeable on these seats, he not only carries tons of parts for these trucks, but he carries the seat covers & the "good" foam kits that are molded to fit these seats perfectly, I bought the Black original cheyenne with scroll pattern from him & he has answered all my dumb questions with great expert info & with class, his name is PICKMUP & he is located in Olympia, Wa. & is very fast at shipping, I will definetly buy from him again. Frank is a great guy to deal with.
