Smoked the 700R4 this weekend

Got a lil aggressive with the burnouts, and there goes 3rd and 4th! ooops!

So now Im trying to decide... Turbo 350 and a bigger tire (running 295/50/16 in the rear, 26.7 tall, would go to a 285/55/16 whick is 28.6 tall) or rebuild the 700. Cost is about the same, but this is my 3rd 700R4!!

If I had already bown up 3, I know I would be swapping it out to either Th350 or 400.

I agree.

I blew 2 TH350's and went to a 700R that was built for the abuse.

Got the Godfather from Maddog Trans and I couldn't be happier (so far anyhow).

Don't know what you had your last 700's built too... but in their original form *most* weren't meant to take much more than about 270HP-290HP and 300 ft-lb of torque, and some were mated to V8 motors with considerable less power than that.

My stock 80's 350 is probably only putting out about 220HP

If you aren't running an extra tranny cooler, that'll help kill them too, especially in the summertime. The later model automatic trannies are less heat-tolerant than the early PwrGlide/TH350/400s, so a supplemental cooler is a must.

Not adjusting the throttle valve cable correctly is another sure fire 700-R4 tranny killer. A few hours of homework and adjustment effort can save you lots of pain later. Your TV cable was adjusted correctly, wasn't it?

Next, the TH700 has a lower low (3.06:1 compared to 2.48:1) and a higher high (30%) higher in fact than a TH350/400. In other words going to 350/400 will hurt on both ends (off the line pickup and highway mileage/MPG). Still, those might be easier pills to swallow than a $2000 bill for a 3rd but decently built TH700.

Were it me, I still think I'd save my pennies and opt for the built TH700 and a tranny cooler.

PS: I've got a 700R4 built by Bowtie Overdrives behind my 450+HP 454. It's running fine for 3 years plus now, burnouts and all.

Let us know what you decide?

Again - I second that.
My 700R4 can readily hold 700HP, or it is just extra super overkill for street abuse and daily driving. It didn't cost me $2k either. (And I have the unlimited mileage 1 year warranty, etc.)

i agree with them about getting a built tranny i always try and get one rated for at least 50% more than i'm ever going to produce

alot of times the cheap turns out really expensive

stock r4's are junk with any extra horse power . you can get it rebuilt with all the stronger stuff for like a grand. I have cooked four stockers with just 375 horses.

for this kind of money just use a stock th400 and a gear vendor O.D. it will 4 sure hold up.....

Sorry, but while I agree that the GVO/TH400 combo is super durable, it's also double the cost or more of a TH700 that's beefy enough to get most engines hooked to the ground reliably.

GVO's are about $2200 to $2500 just by themselves unless you're lucky enough to find one used somewhere.

Well - I don't know if Mad Dog Transmissions changed names, or pissed his guys off or what, but this is the same thing I got:

I bought it off his site, and spec'd out what shift I wanted, etc.
I got a "Stage 2 shift" which is pretty firm. It will definitely get your attention in 2nd (break loose).

Shipping was only an extra $200 or so for me at that time, so I still came in for less than $1600 I believe for the whole swap. This one has free shipping.
