flexplate question

I took out the truck today to enjoy its new paint work and a nice day in Portland. My fun didn't last long as a heavy vibration and gnarly metallic clinking came after playing around. The vibrations are coming from the flexplate (i pulled the inspection cover and its wobbling pretty bad) but is the metallic clunking noise that occurred with shifting the transmission from reverse to drive and vise versa. Are those symptoms of a cracked plate? I checked and all the bolts are still there, its just seems weird that the plate cracked and bent.

Does anyone know what flexplate will work with a 1984 ci305, 700r4 with original starter? I would also like some recommendations on brands!

Thanks guys!!

Re: flexplate question

Check to be sure the torque converter isn't wobbling too. May have a loose converter bolt, or mis-centered converter. If it were a new trans or motor then I would wonder abot trans to motor alignment. Did you check the trans to motor bolts and the trans mount for breakage? Good things to look at when you pull it out to address the flexplate.

Cool Re: flexplate question

I've posted my thoughts on the "Click/Clunk" before, But I can't find the post.

So here goes. (Short version summary)

Had a 90 Caprice, clunked on stop and start. Turned out that I cracked and almost spun the center of the flex plate (where palm of crank bolts thru) completely separate from the rest of the plate. It had just enough interference that it would spin the T/C and move the vehicle. But, The clunk got progressively worse and would have eventually spun free.

Pull the inspection cover and shine a light up in there.

This problem sounds a LOT like U-joints!!
