BUICK aluminum rear finned brake drums ON A 1/2 TON TK. REAR END

ANYBODY ever try to run the old buick finned aluminum brake drums on our 12 bolt truck rear ends ? i,ve got several of them and if a person was rumming wheels where they could be seen they sure would be cool . i run em on my old hot rods in the past. just a thought.

My guess is that the backing plates and drum assemblies would have to stay together. They should have the correct 5on5-inch bolt pattern for the 71-72 rear axles. I don't know about bolting the backing plates to the flanges on a 12-bolt axle, though I am sure that someone will know.

A set of polished, finned aluminum Buick drums would look nice peeking through the right set of wheels.

Re: BUICK aluminum rear finned brake drums ON A 1/2 TON TK. REAR END

I had a '63 Riv that had them. While they were 5 on 5, the center pilot is bigger than the truck, and later "big" cars. Only a problem with OE wheels that center on the pilot. Not sure what year they changed. Some of the big Buicks had 5 on 4-3/4" in the late 60's IIRC. I would think using the big pilot drum on a small pilot drive axle would create a horrible brake pulse.

I believe the big cars, at least until the late '60's stayed with the big bolt pattern.

I don't think GM used any of the 5 on 4.75 pattern on anything larger than a Chevy or a mid-sized car, i.e, Skylark, LeMans, etc.

I don't recall my '67 Skylark having aluminum drums on it, although they were finned. I don't recall seeing any finned aluminum drums that weren't on a big Buick. My thinking is that '67 would have been the last year, since GM went to disc brakes in '68.

I reserve the right to be wrong, though.

I was just thinking... I had a '68 Electra that was 5 on 4-3/4" with the aluminum drums up front. I think '67-8-9 & '70 Electra/ Wildcat/ Lesabre were all the smaller pattern 'till '71. They were all built on the same platform anyway.

the late buick drums are small fins i have the early big fins. the ones all the hot rodders use. they dont care for the small fin drums.
