What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
On my 02 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, I have true duals and it's programmed with a Hypertech. What other mods have you all done and to you feel the extra $$$ was worth it?
I pull a 20' enclosed snowmobile trailer with 3 sleds in the winter, and a 26' fifth wheel RV in the summer. It pulls both trailer fine, but as usual, I'm always on the lookout for cheap added performance! I shouldn't have sold the blower off of my old 03 Silverado!

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
I have added hypertech, cold air intake, mass air flow meter, headers, dual exhaust, throttle body spacer- the flow meter showed no noticable gain, headers and throtle spacer showed the most difference. I want to add different injectors and throttle body at some point and better plug wires than stock.

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
you can add the cold air intake, throttle body, custom tune from somebody like nelsons(that'll give you alot more than the hypertech), LT headers. than, you could add a cam...

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
Well, I ditched the Hypertech, didn't notice any performance or mileage gains from it. I got a custom tune from Wait4Me Performance and added a cold air intake kit, new plugs and wires, and a new fuel filter. What a difference the custom tune made! It's power you can hear and feel! This 3/4 ton will bark the tires going into second now One the first tank, I have already noticed a 1 MPG increase. Should improve a little once I learn to keep my foot out of it!
The tune was $159 including a used PCM, and the cold air intake was $125 off of eBay. Best $284 I ever spent on this truck.

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
Well, I got my first taste of the Wait4Me tune. We pulled the 5th wheel RV to Glendo Reservoir this weekend. Total weight of the RV (including the generator, firewood, and extra water in the bed) is about 7500#. The truck would run 80 in O/D except for some of the bigger hills, in which case I could maintain 70-75 in 3rd. Mileage going up was 9.97 mph. I love that, especially since when pulling the snowmobile trailer, which weights 5500#-5600# loaded with 3 sleds and a weekends worth of supplies and fuel, I got around 7-8 mpg.
Now, I usually pull both trailers at 65-70, mainly because I am never in a hurry and pulling at the slower speeds gives me better MPG, but knowing that I can do that speed WITH a good load on was awesome!!!!

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
Well hey we all appreciate the insight on the tune and intake. I got a stock(for now) '01 Silverado 2500 4x4 with no performance stuff done at all. I was considering whether or not to get a Wheatley tune or a wait4me, as alot of people have had bad customer service and stuff from Wait4me, but I might have to give them a holler and get the tune... They do lifetime upgrades? Thanks

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
Jesse does do free lifetime upgrades. I have had nothing but GREAT service from Jesse. Since I got mine, I have received one for my Dad's 98 GMC 4.3L V-6, and ordered one for my 06 Chevy 2500HD shop truck on Friday. After about 100 miles on that V-6 of Dads, that thing runs like 5.3L now, it's simply awesome!

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
Yes, alot of owners have the wait4me tune for the 5.3L over on www.fullsizechevy.com/forums but i cannot tell you whether it made a difference in the longevity of the tranny life, i know people who are replacing the 4L60E and are running their trucks BONE STOCK, so those trannys arent exactly the toughest, that being said, there are some owners that still havent noticed one problem from them... Glad I have the 4L80E tho.

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
Ditto on the 4L80E!
Yeah, Jesse can do the 5.3L. They are real easy to to. You can buy a core from him and have it programmed for $159 shipped, then you get to keep your stock one. Or send him yours to be programmed for $75. The PCM in right under/beside the battery. Snap the cover off, take the two connectors off with a 7mm socket, and flip up two catches on the PCM and it is out.

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
I personally dont really think, from the sounds of your posts, a tune would kill your tranny. I never read about you taking your truck offroad and beating it, or anything like that, so it seems feasible to get a tune in ur truck and your tranny should be fine... that chance is always there anyway... The tune really only increases line pressure in ur tranny, changes shift points, top speed limiters, and recalculates for different tire sizes, as well as getting rid of the torque management*... The last one is really the only one you need to worry about, as it put a good hunk of power back into the tranny, so if the tranny is on its way out anyway, kiss it goodbye, but if you drive sensibly, IE dont mat it off the line and try'n do stupid stuff that would break a tranny anyway, i dont think you'd have a problem.

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
You can tell him to leave your line pressure stock and it won't change anything on your transmission. Regardless, you are at the breaking point for GM transmissions. I have (or have had) quite a few GM trucks with 100k, 200k and even 400k miles on them The motors will last, but the transmissions go out about every 100k. Sorry to say it, but that been my experience.....

Re: What performance mods have you done, and have they helped?
I've had a W4Me tune by Jesse on my 2000 5.3l GMC for about 2 years now with great success
Very nice bang for the buck on these Vortec motors for sure. |
