Please, need help
I am going to try to make this simple....
I have a 70 truck with drums on it. 6 LUG. If I put wheels on the truck prior to installing disc brakes will the fitment change when I go to install the brakes? I was going to measure up everything and order a set of wheels..but am worried that when I convert to disc brakes that the settings may change, Is this correct. (or arer the rotors the same width as the drums?) Thanks

Usually, when you change to disk brakes they will be 5 lug instead of 6. You may be able to get a 6 lug disk brake kit but I think I would wait on the wheels until you get the brakes updated.... LockDoc

Re: Please, need help
On 4x4s, if you have rims that were originally on a drum brake truck, they won't fit over the calipers on the front disc brakes.
On 2wd, 6-lug conversion disc brakes I'm not sure. But I'm guessing that if you buy rims that fit over the disc brakes on a 71+ 4x4, they'll work on your aftermarket calipers.

Re: Please, need help
There are 6 lug conversions out there. The ones I have seen all require a minimum of 15" rim. Some bolt to the stock spindles some do not. I am speaking from searches that I did for my 68 c10.

Re: Please, need help
everything said here is true.
common disk conversions are 5 lug. You can get 6 lug rotors at quite an increase in cost Wheels made for drum brakes, will not fit over disk brakes. The one thing left out, is the increased track width. The disks will push the wheels out further, and if you are pushing the limits on wheel clearance, then you can run into trouble. Personally, I would recomend going 5 lug... it'll cost a tad more to do becouse you'll have to replace your wheels (which is already in your plan, so that's a moot point) and you'll have to convert the rear. However, it'll save money over the years becouse replacement 5 lug rotors are dirt cheap and at most every parts house in the nation, while the 6 lug ones would have to be special order and are quite spendy. |

Re: Please, need help
LHM,I have to disagree with the 6 lug disc's rotors being pricey.Though I haven't bought a set for replacements but the kit to convert was the same price whether I went 5 or 6 lug. There are way more options in 5 lug for wheels and there are options in rotor thickness for the 5 lug. Some of the FAQ write ups will give details.

Re: Please, need help
at $95 each (I just priced them 2 min ago on a vendors site) they cost at least twice what the 5 lug ones would cost at napa, and more yet compaired to a normal parts chain store. you won't get those 6 lug rotors at any chain store, they are a specialty item.
Also a note, i did not seek out the high priced vendors... one of the middle of the road guys. |
