Timing chain?
I have a 67 K10, SBC, 4spd, NP205. My timing chain had around 12 degrees of slop so I decided to replace it. I pulled the plugs and put the turned the engine over to TDC and felt for pressure coming out of the #1 cylinder. I then exposed the timing chain and found that the timing marks do not line up. I removed the valve cover to watch the valves on #1 cylinder and felt again for pressure. My engine is on TDC but the cam dowel pin is 180 off from every installation manual that I have ever seen.
I assume I could install the new timing chain with both dots up. Is this common for a 283 or 327? Also I cannot find the suffex code for the engine on the website that I have checked Block: casting # 3828180 suffex T0325HCH Heads: 3890462 c236 Camel humps built march 23 1966. Any info on either of these would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Timing chain?
the 2dots are supposed to point at each other in the middle//the cam at the 6oclock position the crank at the 12oclock position// installing the timing chain has nothing to do with tdc compression stroke

Re: Timing chain?
We had a thread about this a while back. Your engine is just fine, when both dots are at 12:00 it is compression time for number 1 cyl. When the crank is at 12:00 and the cam is at 6:00, like you would normally line it up, it is compression stroke for number 6 cyl. Turn the crank around one more full turn tom make liking up easier and don't mess with your distributor and you wll be just fine.
I think the HCH, the last H means Holley carb equipped. I'm doing this from memory, but the HCH could be a holley equiped 327, Kind of rare I think, I have one of those blocks here with HCH, a 327 block, small journal, might be worth some bucks to a restorer.

Re: Timing chain?
Thanks for the replies. So turn one more turn so dots line up and distributor is at #6. This is what I was kind of thinking but just wanted to make sure.
Green machine---- what Holley carb would have come on this engine? What style, BBL#s and CFM? The "CH" codes I found for suffex translations = 1958 or 1962 283ci.

Re: Timing chain?
Exactly a 2:1 ratio between crank and cam by design.
Ergo, the cam alignment dot can be in either the 12:00 or the 6:00 position (as long as the crank is in the 12:00 position) and it'll work file. However, it's easier to ensure the cam's in exactly the right place (not a tooth off) if you'll orient the cam mark in the 6:00 position.

This link has the HCH code, 1966 327 with power glide and Holley carb, that is the block I have, I'll try to see what the rest decodes to and post back.

Re: Timing chain?
Turn it so the dots will align with each other and you will be golden (don’t worry what the dizzy points to)
s/t

Re: Timing chain?
I bet the block casting is 3858180 instead of 3828180 as I could not find the 382 anyway the 3858180 number acording to mortec is :
3858180....327...64-67...2 And given the date codes on the heads are 1966 pretty sure you have a 327 and the camaro site had the HCH code, 1966 327 with power glide and Holley carb, the T0325 means Tonawanda plant March 23. I really think the HCH might be a big deal maybe to some Vette owners.
