cab swap help

Will any cab 67-72 that is a 2wd truck work on a 4x4 frame. I may need to get a bigger hump for the floor but isn't that the only differance.

My next question is Do all of the 4x4 v8 engines sit closer to the firewall than they do on the 2wds?

Re: cab swap help

Yes all 67-72 cabs will bolt up, I hear that you dont even need the high-hump unless you are running a TH-400 tranny. I'm not sure about all 4x4's mounting the engine in the same location, I do know Its tight when You run an HEI..

I'm somewhat in the middle of putting a 2wd cab on a 4x4 chassis. Right now the tranny (TH-350)setting in place, but the cab is held up by 4x4 blocks. I will let you know if I have any clearance issues after I install the cab mounts.

Re: cab swap help

You don`t need the high hump to use a TH400 in a 2wd application as long as your cab mounts are good. But,you do need the hump for a 4wd no matter if you have a TH350 or 4spd.Especially the 4spd since it is a tall transmission w/shifter on top.
All 4wd V8s are mounted back from the 2wd position and are close to the firewall.

Re: cab swap help

I just saw one with an auto trans without the large hump. the guy said he swaped cabs. I don't think it would work with a 4 speed though.
It would be nice to have the access, can't you unbolt the high hump. Who sells them and are they expensive?

Re: cab swap help

You have to get one from another truck.I thought they were all bolt-on.But,I`ve seen them stamped into the floor in one piece.I think it was some of the 2wds that didn`t come off.

Re: cab swap help

Very easy conversion. Set high hump cover over molding on floor, mark mounting hole, remove cover and cut 1" inside holes. Use J-nuts to bolt on.Only takes about an hour. You can move engine to front holes if you put in at least a 4" lift. Reason for being in rear hole was clearance pan to diff. Will put more weight forward though, I haven't had any problems though.....good luck.....Rick ps I have covers for 67-72 and 73 up

Re: cab swap help

I used a 2wd a/c cab that had a low hump floor on my 71 K10.Remember,the low humps werent bolted in and the high humps whether the truck be a 4spd,big block,or 4wd had bolt in high humps.Same cab but they cut the floor out.You can see where the floor needs to be cut by comparing a low hump and high hump cab.Just follow the contour of the floor. The high hump will sit in place on a low hump floor and you know where it needs to be cut.The high humps had nuts welded to the floor on the bottom for where it bolts down.I just used metal screws to hold my floor hump down though.
As for the motor positioning, the 4wds were mounted farther back for differential clearance. You can move the motor/tranny/tcase forward but then factor in the driveshafts needing lengthened and shortened,The fan positioning, etc.
