Re: identify me - series number 2

That is an Eaton Automatic Locker, often referred to as a "Gov-lock". When one wheel spins those flyweights in the center of the picture spread out and apply clutches to lock the axle shafts together.

Re: identify me - series number 2

i've recently got 2 trucks. One is pictured, Gov-locked with 3.42 gears in a 10 bolt. The other is open with 3.07 gears in a 12 bolt and a d44. Which is better to keep. Thanks for the quick replies.

Re: identify me - series number 2

depends, are you dying for the ratio or a locking rear? I haven't heard good things about that rear but I have never had one either.

10 bolt vs dana 44 is pretty equal so which set seems to be in better shape?

Do you have large tires? If so then a larger ratio than either of these would be better IMHO...

Keep the 12 bolt. You will kill that 10 bolt/gov-lock fast with 35s. Even the 12 bolt is marginal for those tires. You also should have 4.10 gears or lower with 35s.

Re: identify me - series number 2

The Gov-lock works well if you are gentle with it, and if you aren't, you should probably get a 14 bolt anyway. It should work with a steeper gearset.
If you only plan to use the truck for wheeling, get rid of that thing.

Re: identify me - series number 2

truck is going to be pulling trees and will be wheeled. Truck will never see the road. I have a 14 bolt. Its 8 lug and would like to use the d44 front diff which is 6 lug, so i guess i'll be using the 12 bolt and d44 for now. Another quick question..... which is stronger, 3/4 ton 10 bolt or a d44 from a 1/2 ton?

They are basically the same strength. The 3/4 ton axle has bigger rotors for slightly better braking.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you go 8 lug right now. Use the 14 bolt - it probably has 4.10 gears already. Convert the front 44 to 8 lug if you want to use it. Unless you already have the 6 lug wheels and tires you would be foolish to use the 6 lug stuff.

Re: identify me - series number 2

i have got a 3.73 rear that is 14 bolt. I have got 6 lug mags that have 15" bfgs mounted on them. So i would like to stay 6 lug. I guess i go until i break something and go from there.
