Tonneau

I thought I'd made a mistake. I sold my '72 Fleetside that I got out of a compost heap in 1998. Took me (with a lot of help from friends) four years to get her to a spot that Classic Trucks ran a little blurb (March '04) on the build. Went to a local show about three weeks ago and decided to put a "for sale" sign in. I got second in the truck category, and no sale. I was happy.

Then a really nice guy who had talked to me at the show called. Came up with the dough in 5 minutes, and drove off with my kid!!!!!

The Jeep didn't fill the gap. In one week, I was scratching like a dog on a fuzzy tree. I found an '83 short stepside in what I thought was pretty good shape.

The cycle is spinning. The credit card is burning. One less nice guitar in the stash is paying for a 350 switch taking place right now. Summit knows my name. Jegs knows my name. UPS knows my name. Ebay knows my name....etc.

I know this for sure. 1) Smog stuff (CA) sucks. And, 2) I need a tonneau cover. I can't seem to find anything like I could for the '72....A soft cover with bows that isn't a million dollars.

I've looked all the places on the web that make sense to me. But all the places that will "custom fit" have "custom prices". The bed already has holes along the side rails....no snaps, just holes where someone must have had a tonneau on it previously.

Any tips....I mean "suggestions"?

so what are you looking for a hard top version or the soft top version cause heres what kmk454 did.

Beautiful job. And beautiful truck. I'm after a soft tonneau with bows for the '83 Stepside Shortbed. Would you suggest Galen's. I don't think I looked there yet.

Sorry, Restro. The truck now resides elsewhere. Being slight of brain, these days, I can't remembver. I remember what I paid and where I got them. But I cant remember the brand of the tires or wheels. But I see the guy every week and I'll bend over and look and send you a note. Maybe I can find them in a couple of other flicks.

In the meantime, here are a few shots...I think some of the tasty flicks of motor transplants make me drool. Well, here's one that doesn't. Out with the old 305...In with a "new" 350.

And the shot of the starter shows that wasps can live in some pretty adverse conditions.

Okay. I called the guy with the '72.

The '72 has Dunlops....P295-50 x 15 wrapped around the Centerlines you see in the filck.

The wheels are 10"W. Pretty sure the front and back are the same width.

Thanks mag, That's the size I had on the rear of my 74 with 60's up front. But going with 50's on all four corners when finished, I like the tread pattern on those Dunlops !

No doubt I was in concord a few months ago pullin parts off a 84 crewcab and there were wasp nests in the door jambs and under the dash and almost everywhere else! anyway nice 83 stepper I got one too!
