I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

Shipped a '67 grill to a fellow about one full state away - the box was about 68" long, by such and such - UPS would have been over $94!!! - so, having limited time, limited shippers in the vicinity and my own fuel cost to drive around, I headed to the post office - they aren't set up for big stuff but up to a certain size, they will take it. OVER $40 in "Oversize-Parcel" fees PLUS the shipping (it was over $55 to ship it!).

I could have searched around for a bus station, DHL, etc, etc, but time (considerable loss of income by the minute) and fuel were also a consideration.

If you get someone to ship you something like this (or anything else "hefty" for that matter), be grateful, it's not cheap and for the most part, a pain in the butt.

Sorry for the rant but just had to throw it out there.

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

DHL has always treated me right on the larger packages. When parting out a 79 Scout a couple years ago, UPS wanted $128 to ship a Scout fender - DHL did it for $56. May not be enough to get you to ship again, but it's worth a look.

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

I feel your pain, I am getting ready to ship a 1970 grill out. If you keep the package size tight around the grill, you may just sneak in under the really painful shipping of over $100. Lot of time spent trying to find the best shipping deal. I'm going to insure it for plenty so if they damage it they will pay.

I would love nothing more than to have the time and ability to ship some of our West coast, rust free sheet metal to you guys in the midwest or East, but I can't afford to take my time to package it up and arrange for shipping, only to discover the individual no longer wants it due to the cost of shipping- AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

i've also had a ton of luck with DHL. i setup an online account with them and their shipping is usually 40-60% cheaper than UPS and FedEx and they have yet to break my stuff (whereas UPS and FedEx has had 4 claims and 5 rejected packages against them both combined in the last 2 years for me)

i always include shipping into my asking price. the most notable shipping experience i had was selling a prepped, painted steel roll pan for a 99-05 Sierra to a board member in mid-USA area (KY, i think?). had to custom make a box and send it out. it was around 4' long, 10" thick, 14" tall. crazy stuff. arrived undamaged, amazingly.

Just keep in mind when packaging large items into small boxes to save the shipping, that most times it will get dammaged. UPS will almost always reject the claim for insuficiant packaging. Large items cost big money to ship, and you need to keep that in mind when looking to buy both new or used parts. WES

I sold a '68 grille a couple months back on here, couldn't make it move so I offered to include the shipping (DHL Ground). I have a DHL account and ship regularly so I was thinking no big deal.

I lost $$ on the transaction, because the shipping cost a few dollars more than I sold it for. As it turned out, DHL slapped me with nearly a $50 surcharge because it shipped to a person's residential address, and there was the additional fee for that. I'm never including the shipping again.

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

here's a secret: if you are shipping UPS, they cannot deny the claim if the box is packed by the people at the store. this may cost you a few xtra $$$'s for their box, time and stuffing, but it also fully insures you.

UPS has rejected every single claim i have ever made in which i packed my own box.

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

I've been shipping DHL for over a year, there quote's are hardly ever right. Sometimes thay are off $5 or more, out of my pocket once I get the bill, but its still cheaper than UPS and Fed Ex. I have had 3 packages damaged by DHL, alot more with Fed Ex. Shipping prices are getting high for sure!!!!

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

It's just dishearting to find or have a good deal and the shipping blows it out of the water. I don't have 50 members with driving distance of me with a ton of nice stuff to sell/buy at a good price (or any price for that matter). I also don't do the parts thing alot so it REALLY a pain to say "plus shipping" because then I have to go figure it out and then get back to the buyer, etc, etc.... (preaching to the choir here aren't I!).. hahaha (no wonder it took 6 minutes to sell - "shipped") anywhoo, had to vent.. I made a little money, he got a solid grill and the post office got some business.... everybody wins.... (I got 3rd).

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

We feel your pain. The last pair of stepside fenders I sold took a long time to cut the cardboard and tape them up so that I felt comfortable that they would make it back east in decent shape. Let alone just finding the right size of cardboard boxes to cut up. It was a sight watching me roll around in the living room floor with all of this cardboard and standing them in different positions to get all of the seams taped.

But I would rather do that for a board member, who appreciates getting good sheet metal, than an eBay'r that I don't really know and may not appreciate the efforts that went into getting their prize to them.

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

I lived off eBay and craigs list for three months last year, man I got tired of packing boxes! I always packed it first and had it wheighed and measured before even listing so when the requests came in, it was easy to get a quote to them. You can't combine shipping that way, but after a couple of times of packing something that didn't sell, I wasn't worried about that.

On the UPS site there is a checkbox for residential and different options. I always chose residential. UPS was always good about claims to me.

USPS???? Nightmare...

I had good luck with shipping Greyhound, but I am sure that was just luck haha...

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

I've always had good luck w/ DHL. A while back I shipped an entire roof clip out of a '62 VW Ragtop from Portland to Eastern PA for 67 bucks! Whereas "Brown" wanted $158. I've sent out at least a dozen packages ranging from 5 lbs to 120 lbs via DHL without an issue. USPS is a joke and greyhound just doesn't sit well with me.

Re: I think I've shipped my first and last grill...

It`s known fact that grilles, although light in weight, are oversized and the shipping kills long distance sales.Guys on here that part trucks will always suggest pick-up on grilles.

Don't rule out shipping via motor freight (truck line) Especially if you work at a business or know someone that ships stuff regularly. Oftentimes it is cheaper to strap something to a pallet and ship that way.

YES, THEY WILL!

Long story short I ended up splitting the cost of $70 worth of sway bar brackets and bushings with a board member (not their fault).
