Cobra IRS and Vette IFS???

I remember reading something about someone wanting to put a cobra or explorer IRS in one of our era trucks. I finially found me a 87 vette IFS complete for $300. I have been thinking about putting a cobra IRS in my blazer like my old man did in his 66 vette. I hate to cut up the bed floor for step notch when I could do the IRS and only have to make the wheel tubs taller and do a little notch for the upper arms. I am going to be making over 450 hp to the rear wheels so the IRS should hold up as long as I don't dump the clutch too much Good idea or not?

Great idea! Just make sure you set it up to still run fat backspacing. Late model offset is UGLY...

I say go for it! I know PorterBuilt is making a back half kit for the vett set up. If you go with a vet make sure you get the Dana 44 and not the Dana 35 third member. To decide between the ford or chevy set up I would see if one is narrower than the other from wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange and go with that one for a better rimm offset look.

and really even the difference between a 44 and a 35 is a moot point. If you end up with a 35 you can get a carrier girdle to strengthen it up. other than that you half shafts, u joints become the weak link.

I may go with the cobra IRS since my old man just put on under his 66 vette. He made the control arms and the cradle that holds the chunk. It is a little overkill with the size tubing he made it from but you don't have to worry about them.

I would consider the expedition rear or lincoln continental which is already airbagged. Both those are heavier and better suited for the weight of the truck than a Cobra rear.

Re: Cobra IRS and Vette IFS???

Don't know what hp a Cobra rear will break but a D44 corvette will break around 600 rwhp if it hooks. D36 even less

I think it will hold up since I wont be taking it to the track and I will be running a 4l80e and I have the idea of a prochaged 6.0 for the engine bay. I think you would be braking stuff if you were rough on it. I have dumped the clutch in many a mustang though and even spun a rod bearing doing it and the rear held up, so a cobra rear should be a little strong, maybe.

Re: Cobra IRS and Vette IFS???

The Cobra rear is standard Mustang 8.8 ring gear- plenty strong. The weak link is the half sfafts...
