starter troubles...
what are some reasons for a starter to short and continue running after turning the ignition off?
this happened to me a few weeks ago and caused the battery wires to heat up... the positive wire got so hot it started smoking and melted the terminal right out of the battery! thought i was gonna have a fire, and i was pissed, too, cuzz it was a relatively new battery... thanks |

one of the hot wires that melted either melted against a ground or got cut. check around the manifold/ maybe something melted to one of them.

well for hot wires it normally a ground issue. Reason for me removing the ground strap fpr my engine it got red hot so i removed it and ran another from the motor to the battery no more issues.
As for the starter to continue to run it would be a switch getting stuck, or the starter silinoid is just stuck. aka bad starter.

okay, so i should replace my starter... same thing happened to the starter before this one, but no melting terminals... so, if two starters have gone bad the same way, is there anything i should be looking for that would cause them to short? as far as i can tell, there are no bad grounds, no corrosion, no cut or rubbing wires anywhere, or anything out of the ordinary...
anything you guys come up with, i'm listening... |

this starter might have been a fluke. I know my starter were out alot on me (headers) i should really shield them but hey autozone keeps giving me new ones soooooo.
my last one shot spark everywhere and bent my flywheel. but i really didnt mind. i saw it as a learning experance. (gm flywheels suck and autozone are better.) gm 169.00 auto 30.00 something. gm bends under alot of power and strein, auto zone been in there for longer and no bending and they are both stock replacements. GM wouldnt take it back. but yea start might just been bad but look at the motor ground strap just for kicks.

where SHOULD the ground strap be located? i was under the truck the other day and saw some likely places for one, but there was no strap that i could see...
that being said, the negative battery wire itself IS grounded to the frame... how do you guys have your grounds setup? some pics would be great... |
