Vacume Gauge Hookup Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I,ve Got A Vacuum Gauge In My Cluster And I Want To Hook It Up. I,ve Never Seen One Of These Hooked Up Before And I Was Wodering How The Factory Hooked Them Up ? Do They Run A Hard Copper Line Like The Oil Pressure Line ? I Have A 350 S.b And Where On The Intake Or Carb Does It Hook Up To In Order To Get A Accurite Reading. Any Help Is Appreciated.

You can use either a hard line or a good quality rubber line (such as fuel). Hook it up to manifold vacuum ---many 350's have a multi port fitting mounted just behind the carb or just get an inline spliter (T) to run to you gauge. Pretty basic.

If you want the vacuum needle to be bouncing all over the place then hook it up to a vacuum source directly, someplace.

If you want it to work like it was intended on the big trucks, then install an AC vacuum tank, and run the vacuum gauge to the vacuum tank, then the vacuum tank to the carb or other vacuum port. It will be a little more steady.

Up to you what you want for a result....

I had auxillary gauges on my '65 when I encountered a problem. In my youth, I had answered the challenge of another kid to rack off my pipes. I won. Only thing is now I have a bad vibration. I'm thinking I dropped a valve. I shut off the ignition. I thought, wait, I have a vacuum gauge. So I fired it back up. Steady vacuum. Good news.

Bad news was that the fan belt had twisted and bent the water pump shaft.

My guage wasn't hooked to any tank, just to manifold vacuum. It was an instant response to changes in vacuum.
