Needed to replace my rearview mirror in my truck. A new one like the original was just too much.

So I decided to go with one that glues to the glass. I went to the local salvage yard and picked one up that has map lights in it. I ran the wires above the headliner and wired it up. It came out pretty good I think.

Did you remove and reinstall the headliner? Details please on how you ran the wires.

That's a really good job. I need to replace mine, I think I'll consider the same thing. Although I don't have a headliner. I'll have to figure something else out on the wiring.

I replaced the factory rear view mirror in my 67 with a unit that has the compass and auto-dimming from a 2000 Silverado. No headliner in my truck either so I just tucked the wires into the windshield rubber down the drivers side to the fuse panel. Works well and no ugly wires hanging in the way

So the wires fit under the rubber. Good for you. That's what I think I'll do. I would have thought they would force the rubber to stick out enough to be noticeable.

My headliner is loose so that helped.

I drilled a small hole under the original mirror base cover. Then I had to drill a hole under the modling for the headliner. Pulled the wire through the holes. Pulled the wire across the top of the headliner. Drilled another hole under the molding then pulled the wire to the dome light. I also had to route a wire to a door swtch so they would go on and off with the doors opening and closing.

Does any of that make since?

Does a mirror with a compass have a sensor that needs to be pulled also, or is it built into the mirror?

That is a nice setup. I did mine about a year ago. Drilled a small hole inside where the original mirror cover went, then fished some 18/5 strand wire through the top of the headliner to the back. Then drilled another hole so that I could fish the wire down to the inside dome light opening, and then on down through the cab and to the fuse box. I wired the dome light to come on only with the headlight switch. I installed bottom courtesy lights under the dash to come on when the doors are open. I installed the extra wire count (5) at the mirror for future use. Like when I find a mirror that does outdoor temp. Then, I'll have the wire for the sensor already waiting.

If it has the compass only it is built in - just need the switched power wire to make it work.
