60-66 chevy parklights
I have a 1965 chevy C-10, I was wondering whats the easiest way to keep the parklights on when my headlights are on. I've heard of using a scotchlock-or quickconnector and tie in the #4 post To the #7 post in the headlight switch, does this sound right? Any other ideas? Thanks.

The front parkling lights only come on in the middle position of the headlight switch....but the rears come on regardless of position. So by connecting the two together, you will get front output as well. John

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
so what is the purpose of the scotchlok? Aren't you just connecting 4 wires together?

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
No you're connecting two wires that are parallel to each other. By using a Scotchlock' you're just creating a connection between the two wires. I might add that if you use a Scotchlock, you'll need to cut out the tab inside so that you can use it on two continuous wires. At least thats they way I've done it.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
I'm still confused, sorry. lol
So your taking the brown and purple wires, parallel to eachother, and "fusing" them together, right? So why can't I just double them up in a butt connector? |

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
Here is the method I used to make the park lamps come on with the head lights. It is the short red jumper wire with the black connectors. I like the Scotchlock snap-on connector like CheifRocka used, however I only had the black connectors in my eletrical connector arsenal. For some reason, I had to use the purple and blue wires to make it work. Perhaps the previous owner had done some shade tree electrical modifications. In any event, it works and I like to look at night better than just the head lights.
Good luck with your modification. |

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
I tied the purple and brown #4 and #7 post. The park lights come on with the headlights but now my turn signals will not come on when the headlights are on, any ideas how to fix this? thanks.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
just a wild guess...bad ground? does the "brightness" on the parking lights change at all with the flasher?

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
The lights are bright and the rear signals come on, but for some reason the front lights do not blink? Do I need diffrent bulbs? Where would I have a bad ground? thanks.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
another guess, but could someone have rewired your front park lights? when you have just the park lights on, are they brighter than the flashing turn signal with lights off? that could mean that the filaments are wired backwards (bright side to park lights, dimmer side to signals.)

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
they still should blink though, regardless of what filament is being used.
So when the parklights are on, and you put on the blinker, does the park light on that side get brighter and stay solid, or do they not get brighter at all? Do your indicators in your dash blink? edit: it could be a bad ground, are your parklight housings rusty? Last edited by 19GMC63; 08-10-2007 at 05:42 PM. |

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
If the bulbs are in backwards, the bigger filament will be so bright that you cant see the smaller blinking. If you try turning the bulbs around, you may find that they do blink, and pretty brightly at that because they will be utilizing the bigger filament.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
Its impossible to put parklight bulbs in backwards. One slot is shorter than the other, and one nipple thing on the bulb is further up the bulb than the other.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
I used a quick connector on the headlight harness-I connected the brown and purple wire together, this causes the parklights to come on with headlights, However now they don't blink when I turn my turn signals on. The signals in the dash come on and the rear lights blink. The front parklights are on they do not get brighter or dimmer they stay the same. everything else works fine. Any ideas? thanks.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
OK..I know this was asked already....but
When you turn on your headlights, are the front P.L. lighting up the running light or the brighter turn signal filiament ?? How about when you turn the headlights off...does it flash at all ?? Is it dimmer then when the HL are on with no turn signal ?? Have you checked the harness plug at the firewall with a test light ?? With the headlights on you should have only one hot lead at that connector. Then check you turn signals....LT should flash on side.....and RT should flash the other connector. This shouldn't that big of a deal to figure out. Start at that connector, and let us know what you got. And also, if the sockets are worn out, you can insert a bulb backwards, BTW.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
thanks for the replys, the parklights work when my headlights are off, but when I turn my headlights on the get brighter and do not blink. Did I do the right thing connecting the purple and brown wires in the headlight harness or is this something else? thanks.

Re: 60-66 chevy parklights
you may want to check the pigtail in behind the socket. i can't remember if the front lights are the same as the taillights, but i know with taillights you can plug the pigtail in backwards. the bulb won't go in backwards, but the short pigtail that comes off the socket is reversable on the taillights, and maybe front parks too.
