350 carb guys......which cam??
Alright the extreme energy 268h cam in my wife's truck just lost 7 lobes. Yes I said 7!! Now since I have to rebuild it again I'm thinking about going with a different cam. Looking for something with plenty of off idle torque, but we want to keep the rough idle sound. The motor is .040 over 350 with a stock crank--shot peened rods--Hypereutectic flat tops--gear drive--Performer RPM intake--Holley 600--Hei--Hedders--Ported and port matched 64cc heads--B&M Turbo 350 with a stage 2 shift kit and 2000 rpm converter. And a 3:73 rear end. Those of you running similar setups, what cam are you using? How is it for tire lighting torque? How does the idle sound (noticeable, choppy, rough, racey)? I'm just trying to decide which brand, and which grind I want to go with. The XE268H had a noticeable to choppy idle. But we were looking for a more rough idle without sacrificing too much low end grunt. All suggestions and even SOUND CLIPS will be helpful.

If you're wiping lobes that badly and that quickly, you may want to consider a hydraulic roller or full roller cam instead. Oils are getting lower zinc levels recently and it's really bad on flat tappets. Some run diesel oil or race oil to prevent this from happening, but either that or a roller cam should prevent it from happening again.
Sorry dude.

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
try the comp cams 286h. plenty of lope, might need to step up to a 3000 stall, i think the range is 2800-7000, no need to power brake, just stand on it and wait for the tires to heat up
2.02/1.60 heads with 64cc chambers, 1.6 roller rockers, .030 over, headers, 650 afb carb, headers, performer rpm intake. |

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
how did you lose 7 lobes I ran that same cam for years without problems, in fact all the cams Ie had have been from comp with no issues, what lifters did you use there usually the cause of this, I ran mine with 110 lb springs to and still never lost a lobe. The 268 xeh (you had) is probably the best flat tappet cam with the widest range of power unless you go with a roller cam set up

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
I'm not sure yet what happened but I think it was a hardening problem. The motor has about 6500 miles on it and it lost all the lobes within the last 20-50 miles. There are actually some bad flaws you can see right on a couple of the lobes. I'll see if I can get some pics for you. I'm hoping when they receive the cam they'll admit it was their fault and cover my bearings, gaskets, and crank, and the cam and lifters of course. The lifters came with the cam in a kit. the springs are Elgin stock style good for .490 lift. I'm just SURE this is a cam problem and not an oil, or break-in problem.

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
Comp cams does stand behind there product but Ive never heard of there cams going flat, chevy in the late 70's had a hardening problem on the 5 and 7 exhaust lobes but Ive never heard of comp cams having this issue, anyway Id run the same came bang for buck wise its the best out there, like I said i have not seen a flat tappet that has a wider powerband than that one, if you can afford a roller go staight to gm and get one of there high end rollers youll have low end and top end.

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
I am running that cam and it is an all around great cam. BUT, man is it a noisy little bugger. From the inside of the truck it sounds like all of the rockers are loose but standing outside you can't hear a thing. I called Comp and they said it was just because of the aggressive nature of the extreme energy cams. They slam the exhaust valve down hard enough to make some noise. If it were up to me, I would try something else next time around. I've heard good things about the vodoo cams.

I was thinking about trying a Crane Z-Cam. Anybody used one of those yet?

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
I've got a388 cid. with a comp cams 270 4x4 extreme. It has a rough idle and a ton of torque from idle to redline. Also using rpm intake but with a holley 3310 carb, tci brakeaway convertor. It makes for a really good launch.

I've got the crane 427/454 powermax cam in my 350. I wish I could tell you how it runs, but I don't know yet.

Re: 350 carb guys......which cam??
I put the crane energizer .467 lift cam in mine(part # 100132) it sounds great and is very throttle responsive ,but I need more torque converter because it pulls the brakes at stop lights.
