Post starting the engine with out the tranny in?

i have my tranny pulled out but my engine is still mounted. is it ok to run it? or do i have to worry about it falling forward or backwards? because the tranny is what stabilized it from that. and is the flywheel ok as long as theres nothing in the way? thanx in advance

Just set the engine on something kinda tall. I used a large coffee can under a Camaro, and a bottle jack under the old Longhorn. If your engine is only beeing supported by your exhaust and motor mounts, you better go do something now. They will all be junk. I busted my ram horns, and destroied my motor mounts by keein it like that for about 3 months.
However, you are right, as long as your fly wheel is clear, you can start it. I wouldn't romp on the gas too hard, you are missing a mounting point there.

nothing wrong with that as long as you dont break any of the above items, mounts or manifold,s etc. i once started up an engine minus oil pan and timing cover, etc, yeah.... was a 1969 Ford 240 engine.. back when i didnt know any better. it ran nevber locked up or squeaked or anything, i eventually put it back together and drove the truck again, the engine outlasted the body. i eventually disassembled engine for the last time after the front clip fell apart.
good luck!
