door check cotter pins

I just bought some new door checks and they did not come with the pin to hold the door check to the door pillar. What kind am I supposed to look for? I want the kind that used to be in there, the one that you push upward to take out. it has a little flare in it.

Re: door check cotter pins

the little arm that sticks out of the door and holds it from opening too far. that is the door check. the arm has a hole on the end in which a cotter pin of sorts goes through it and holds it in. In my case, it came with one rusty 3 inch nail and a proper cotter pin on driver side. With my new door checks, I want to do it a bit better. Maybe I will rivet the SOB?

I actually still have my old pins I think....but I would like to have new ones.....I'm not sure if I damaged one trying to drive it out the wrong way...didn't know they were tapered...

if it's tapered like 64GMChorsepower said it's probably not a roll pin cause I use roll pins at work and I've never heard of a tapered one. Basically a roll pin looks like a rolled up newspaper that you're gettin ready to swat a fly with. It could be a tapered shear pin. Was it hollow inside like a pipe? You could take your door check to Lowes or Home Depot they sell shear pins of all sizes and lenghts in the nut and bolt department. Don't know if that helps.

If it is in fact a RP, you can get those at the hardware store.

Re: door check cotter pins

Now that I look at it, I think the roll pin is just mushroomed a bit from hammering them down.

I would just buy new roll pins, and run with it
