14 bolt factory heavy duty six lug
I read about these rears in 4 Wheel & Off Road last year in the October 2006 edition. They were put in 3/4 ton six lug trucks in the late 80's and 90'. It is a semi floating 9.5 inch ring gear version of the 14 bolt with a 6x5.5 lug pattern. They require a u-joint conversion kit for a swap, that's it. Anyone have additional info on one of these or where one might be?

Re: 14 bolt factory heavy duty six lug
FYI, they also came in a 5 lug version in the SS454 trucks. they are stronger than a stock 12 bolt, larger ring gear diameter , larger axle shaft diameter. i have an 8 lug version semi float i'm putting under my blazer with 4:10s and posi. 5 and 6 lug versions are not too common around here and junkyards want a fortune for them.

Re: 14 bolt factory heavy duty six lug
Longhorn, I'm just looking for some extra strength. Like alot of the good folks here, I appreciate a smoky burnout, but running 35's I always have a fear of snapping a rear axle. ETA Is there a difference between the 2wheel and 4 wheel drive rears? The closest parts guy has a few in stock, any pointers on picking a good one? One time at age of 18 I had a 1970 1 ton dually with a 14' flatbed I used to tow a concrete pump, I replaced the steering box hastily (had to use my truck in the morning for a job) upon my test drive I found I had to turn my wheel in the opposite direction, I considered giving it a try but common sense prevailed. Back to the parts store, again. I also did a weekend motor swap that took me all of Sunday night into Monday morning early. I put the old motor on the flatbed, on this test drive I lost the motor coming around the corner near my house, it rolled all the way up to someones front door at 2 in the a.m. imagine their surprise in the morning. Sorry for rambling on, just reminiscing a bit.
