Lock-Right or spool for front Dana 60
What do you guys thing should I use a lock right or a spool in my d60 front I cant make up my mind I have an open carrier for the 4:56 gears but it would be just as easy to put a spool in when I do the gear swap. Waht do you guys think?

spools are bad, m'kay.
you need it to give when it needs to give, and a spool wont do that. as you very well know, Dana 60 front parts arent cheap. |

A spool in the front gets great traction. As long as you don't want to steer all is good.

I disagree fella's........We don't go four wheeling on pavement! 9 times out of ten the ground will give before you brake a D60.....the other one time is when your common sense says to unlock the hubs. However...the best thing to do is cough up the dough and buy an air or electric system. I once heard it said that if you do it right the first time...it will be cheaper than re-doing it later.
Just my $0.02........ A.....

I have a lock right in mine and love it, well as long as I am going straight. If you lock/spool it you will need hydro assist to steer. Of course this all depends on your type of offroading.

Re: Lock-Right or spool for front Dana 60
I was thinking for the price of an ARB or electric locker i can have hydroassist and have money left over. Its going in my burb so the trails its going to go down will be limmited its more of a work horse then a trail truck I want to build a buggy for that.

Re: Lock-Right or spool for front Dana 60
Totally depends on usage, their both valid ways to go. (yes even a spool)
I HAD a lock-rite but for my needs it wasn't enough and have since been running a spool with good results. When I went to a spool, I used the extra funds to upgrade to 4130 alloy axles and better u-joints. On the trail I run it locked, turning does suffer some but worth it IMO. Selectable lockers are great/the best WHEN they actually work but not 100% by any means. It's all about what you need/expect to get out of your burb. When and where you need it most. It's a tough call for sure but are you looking for 4wd ALL the time or can you deal with only 3 at times? (or 2wd when the selectable breaks ) Last edited by vtblazer; 08-13-2007 at 08:29 AM. |

Re: Lock-Right or spool for front Dana 60
I was thinking with a twin stick case and a locking hubs instead of drive flanges It wouldnt be to big of a trouble. I can had hydro steering and a spool foor the same pric as the lock right or I can get teh lock right and hydro for the cost of a detroit or or some sort of seletable locker. it spends most its time in 2wd any way. I know it will be seeing some mud and sand when Im in fla and around here some mild trail use and towing boats and trailors around. I rilly want to build a buggy for the hard trailes.
the only draw back I see to a spool would be in the snow .

Re: Lock-Right or spool for front Dana 60
Sounds like you may have better results with a Posi or limitied slip up front. Why do you feel the need to lock up the front if your not doing any extream wheeling with your burb? I ran 10yrs with posi's front and rear with great traction. Now I am locked front and rear I now understand how terriable the streeing is with a locked front diff. If a locker is up front Hydro and crossover is a must.
just my .02c Oh and I have a lock rite and only one trip so far. Seams like it works like it tis suppose too...all tire turning

Re: Lock-Right or spool for front Dana 60
I put cross over steering on it. I am thinking lock it becuse even though I say I wont be doing any hard off roading I have a habit of not sticking to that I know if I go visit friends and family in NC and Fla it will be in the sand or mud and water up to its doors. Im use to the 72 K5 I had it had a spool in the front and detroit in the rear with hydro steering I mis that blazer. But I didnt drive it as often as I will be driving the burb it was more for trails only and lots of mud and beach time serf fishing .Around here there are rocks and moutans to play around on .
Im starting a Kyak rental so it will have a lot of time running back and forth up and down the river pulling the Kyak trailer around.
